Surf in Bali?

I was standing under a warung on an uncrowned beach in What I'm pretty sure was Bali, Indonesia. It was mid morning. There were 3 people in the warung with me, but I was unable to see their faces.looking out over what was the ocean looked more like a lake. I could clearly see the other side of. Green hills and tropical vegetation. The water was a very clear electric blue. You could see the reef under where the waves were breaking. I grabbed my board and proceeded to paddle out. A wave was coming so I turned to paddle. As soon as I got a few strokes in my alarm went off. Figures!
