Friend's Lost Hearing

I'm in a lift with my friend John P and his girlfriend. I've not seen him in a long time and I'm shocked to discover he has lost his hearing completely. He is communicating in sign language. I can understand bits of it and know a few words myself. He seems to have taken it very well. When he leaves fit a moment, his girlfriend tells me how stressed he's been.
