I arrived to campus for the first day of classes, where the staff informed us that we students had to pass an unusual test in order to enroll this year. Our challenge was to battle or escape wild animals, which would be set loose in the school after we entered. The animals were abundant and varied from small iguanas to deadly panthers. We either had to fight and kill 3 animals of increasing strength (at which point we would be expedited to the top of the class) or escape and hide until dusk (which would afford us a lower spot at the school). After the bell sounded we all ran into the campus. I chose the route of hiding and flitted between rooms, blocking the doors with desks and chairs so the bigger animals couldn’t get in. In the hallway I encountered a mountain lion, and as I ran from it a tall, muscular guy leaped out from a classroom and drove a makeshift spear he had assembled out of rulers and scissor blades into the lion’s back—distracting it enough for me to escape. I found myself out in the open in the court yard, and I saw a girl in a tree so I decided to join her and wait out the last hour or so til dusk.
