My friend’s work paid for them to take an afternoon flight in first class from LA to Huntington Beach. I was going to go to the thrift store that day but I decided to join them on the flight, just for fun. Now these areas are like an hour apart, so the flight was literally fifteen minutes. However, my friend slept the whole time. I thought this was a total waste of a first class ticket. The flight lands, and I regret my decision. I want to check the price to Uber or fly back to LA. Then I’m like, well at least I can go check out what HB is like and go thrifting there. Then I realize my phone battery is at 10% and I don’t have a charger. Well... sh**. And it’s pretty late in the afternoon, so it’ll be getting dark soon. I get out and start walking around. I make it to a little downtown district. There are a lot of high school aged kids around, dressed really trendily. It seems to be a style here to wear glitter face paint and put a hashtag symbol (#) on your cheek in pastel paint. I ask a group of 3 girls where I can buy a charger and they seem confused. I’m like, “Is there anywhere I can find like a Ralph’s? A Home Depot? Wal-Mart? Any big box store or convenience store with electronics? Come on guys.” One of the girls offers me her charger, but it’s a micro USB. I thank her but tell her I need an lightning charger. Apparently people here only have Androids or Galaxy phones because she’s really confused. I walk further into the downtown district and try to find a place to buy a charger using Maps. The place has a quaint cobblestone feel, I see only little independent specialty shops and restaurants. But I’m like god damn, I don’t need a pretentious vegan pizza parlor right now! I need a basic store! I see a Target close to me on Maps. To get there, I end up running through a fantasy themed obstacle course meant for kids. I try to run fast but I keep tripping over my sandals. Finally i make it to the base of a mountain and see a parade happening. All the Target employees are doing a parade for their “grand opening.” I’m like so the store isn’t open yet??! One of the employees tells me it is, but it’s “20 miles up the mountain.” So I start hiking.
