Dream: Blinkers

It was a dark mansion of sorts. I lived there with other lost souls. Not that we were spirits. We were kind of...something more. We were physical beings but could become ethereal in the blink of an eye. There were only two people I hung out with in this prison-like place. Alicks and Jane. Alicks was a tomboy with an amazing sense of adventure. Some nights she’d hang out with us as we explored new areas...other nights she’d be with her boyfriend in his room. I don’t even have to guess some things that happened in there. Then we have Jane. He’s my best friend. A misfit like me. He had come to America from England before he got rounded up and put here with the rest of us. He has the most beautiful blue-green eyes and a smile that could light up your heart. That’s probably why he’s so well loved amongst us Blinkers. Stupid name, right? Thank you America. I don’t really remember my name. I was a street rat that got caught and thrown in here. Jane called me Rogue. He said I reminded him of the comic book character. I was an outcast who was too scared to get close to people but would do anything to protect my friends. Yeah, I agreed with him on the comparison too. Jande and I seemed to have connected the most out of our tiny group of friends. We knew what each other wanted and how we felt just by a few tiny changes in body language. Alicks got it right about 75% of the time. We give her credit for trying.     The hardest part about living in the mansion though is the Reavers. We “Blinkers” named them that. They were soul thieves when in a bad mood. In a good mood they’d make you a deal. But this was only if you didn’t follow the rules. Like being in your room at a certain time and not being in rec halls after hours. Jane, Alicks, and I were really good at getting away with it when we’re together. But...one day Jane vanished. We knew it wasn’t a Reaver cuz they may be assholes but they at least tell you if they have to get rid of someone you’re close to. No one said anything and we couldn’t find him. I was looking around the rec halls all over the mansion. Checking as many of our adventure pieces as possible. I couldn’t find him. I hated it.     “Rogue breathe.” Alicks said, her boyfriend right behind her. I never got his name. Never asked because of how often she switched boyfriends.     “I can’t okay. Jane is missing and he...he wasn’t built for that stuff like we are.” I replied as I fought back my tears. “He wasn’t made for the hard life. He was raised in a good home with no worries. He...he told me himself that he’d never get used to this place.”     “I know but he will be ok cuz we will find him.” Alicks said and wrapped me in a hug. “Have you checked the library yet? That was his main place to get away from everything.”     I shook my head. “It’s the one place I couldn’t go alone. The three of us first met in there.”     “That’s why I suggest we go there.” Alicks said with a small smile.     We dug through the library and weren’t finding anything in some of the main areas. Soon we heard the warning sound for the release of the Reavers because it was now after hours. Alicks and I hid in her boyfriend’s room but it seemed to no avail. The Reaver woman somehow knew we were in there. I explained the situation and made a deal with her. She and the other Reavers turned a blind eye to the three of us till I found Jane...and she could have my soul. She agreed. We headed back to the library with her as an escort so the other Reavers would know the situation. Alicks led me to Jane’s favorite study spot where we looked around and found tow bottles. One with his name on it. One with mine. There was a book next to them that hand notes scribbled on most every page. He was trying to find a way to make us human. To make us normal. I clutched the book and bottles to me.     “I’m sorry Jane...I’m so sorry…” I whispered because now his plan wouldn’t work because I would lose my soul. Then I woke up.
