Sandal Barriers

I'm with a man who's older than me and heavyset. He has a series of wooden rectangles on his chest, like sandals with writing in another language on them. They're light wood with red, natural paint. Each time I try to pass, he holds a sandal out from his chest to stop me. He's got long brown hair tied back in a ponytail and I know him.
