I was in class (grad school) and someone I went to high school with, Chris, showed up late. He apparently hooked up the clock in the classroom to some minor, harmless explosives to show off. The clock blew open. Due to the smoke, the fire alarms for the whole building started to go off. A lot of people from the class went outside but I stayed in knowing there wasn’t actually a fire and the smoke had quickly dissipated. The registrar came by and saw me and a few other students still in the room. She said something that insinuated that I caused the issue and that I will face appropriate consequences. I immediately asked if I could talk to Chris and our professor in private. The three of us walked outside and went to a quiet area. “Chris I think you’re a good guy,” I started. “I’ve never treated you badly. I want to say… I think you should step up and inform the registrar it was you who set off the fire alarm. If you don’t, it seems like someone else will get blamed which would be really insane.” We all walked back towards the class. Chris and the professor went back in through the outside doors. I went through the main entrance and past the registrar’s desk. She saw me and I overheard her saying lowly, “she always looks angry. She’s quiet, never talks to anyone. And she has no friends.” I started to panic really starting to believe somehow I would get in trouble. I just made it to the classroom when the registrar showed up behind me with a police officer who started handcuffing me. I was in a complete panic knowing this would affect and maybe even ruin my career. I was bewildered at how there could possibly be probable cause to arrest me. I hoped I could get everything dropped at my arraignment but I would still have an arrest on my record. I looked around at everyone for help, all my classmates, Chris, and the professor. Everyone was silent and avoiding eye contact. I was so shocked and angered that not one person was willing to tell the truth.
