Roman numerals?

All I can remember is that somebody asked me what chapter I was on in A Farewell to Arms. I flipped open my book and looked at the Roman numeral on the page. It looked like a two story building made of black rectangular pieces with a black outline of a fire on the top of its roof point. It made absolute no sense, but I told them I was on, like, Chapter 23 or 27.
