We are driving to my dad’s family cabin (he doesn’t have one IRL) and we are going through a tiny town up an impossibly steep dirt road. At a stop sign I have to reach out the window to hold onto a stucco wall so the car doesn’t roll back. I tell the passengers this town hasn’t grown in population since my dad was a small child. We get to the cabin and my dad and his family are already there. We start delegating rooms. First is my grandmother’s. We drop toiletries off in the hall bathroom and realize there is no sink. My dad and mom then tell me the story of a horrible storm that destroyed pieces of the house. My mom keeps saying the house had flipped over but my dad disagrees and explains parts of the roof ripped off and the walls split. We move down the hall to my uncle’s room. My grandmother seems uncomfortable because she knows he likes to cause trouble. The living and kitchen area seems newly renovated and the walls are painted white over wood planks. As we get settled I go to get ice out of the freezer and it’s overflowing with little nugget ice cubes that have been mixed with an exploded soda. They spill all over the floor. My dad comments that that ice maker never worked properly. Meanwhile apparently my uncle has snuck a girl into his room against my grandmothers’ wishes and so she tries to leave. I go out to the driveway and the street is covered in the soda ice nuggets. Grandmother is stuck in her car.
