Real Age of Empires for hours

I was playing a sort of Age of Empires game where I was building a small frontier religious town. I chose where to put the town store, a few houses, a farm, etc. I chose to make villagers, but they each had personalities, so I could figure out how to best place them. One villager had the dream to be a writer, so I decided to make him work at the town store so he could get work and think about writing on his downtime. I played this game for hours because it was addicting, and I remember thinking how mad my wife would be for wasting so much time playing it.
