"Shortcut"

I'm driving an ATV on a dirt road through the woods with my dad. The ATV runs out of gas as we have to push it. But a huge oncoming truck is blasting down the road so I hold my hand out to signal his stopping because we're in the middle if the road when we ran out of gas. He stops, then laughs at us. As my dad and I are bow walking through the woods, I see a stairwell to the left on a smaller path. I see it, and run for it. I start climbing the stairs and up they go, higher than I had thought. I told me dad that I'm taking a short cut! But as I go on, the stairs are winding and long, this will take much longer than if I can just stayed in the ground path with my dad...
