Travel woes - exposed luggage

In my dream I was traveling to Colombia ( just went there in real life) and I was staying in a hostel but had to switch to a hotel half way through the trip. When I was traveling on my own on a bus, a tall German was talking to me and asking to see my passport. She said she was worried about me traveling alone and said I seemed like a "baby American." I told her I didn't have my passport with me and they normally I wasn't going to travel by myself. Later I was taking a cab ride to my hotel and I was with another woman I was traveling with - she was short, had darker skin, and spoke English and another language but not Spanish. As we were driving by, I saw my luggage sitting in front of someone's house where they were having a yard sale. I panicked and jumped out of the cab and told them to wait. I immediately checked for my passport in the luggage and found it. I hauled the suit case In the cab with me and we went back to the hotel. I was really angry/scared. The woman and I thought that maybe someone working there may have thrown it out. I felt lucky my passport was still there but wanted to talk to the manager of the hotel or something. I wondered who could dislike me that much. It felt very vulnerable. I remember going to a restaurant by accident and a server who spoke Spanish and some English was so excited to see an American and he tried to get me to stay. He was very energetic and kind of flirty.
