There was a devastating flood on LA and I was with some friends trying to get back to LA. One way was to float back. This was a standard way that many people were taking. The way it worked was that a pain killer, methadone, would be placed inside my ear —via an ear plug that would keep the nasty water out. Then, I could then float atop the high flood waters in a large group back to LA. The large group and the well tested path made this way the safest way back as there was a specific route being used I was skeptical. I imagined the methadone was to protect the floater from the horror of all that would be encountered on the trip back to LA—-dead bodies, raw sewage, floating coffins—-god only knows what else. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go that route. The other way was to hike around..but were were way far out by Joshua Tree and we were not sure where the path was or if there was even any path.
