I was at a school-related gathering at a house where someone’s mother and father were collecting things, getting ready to go. Someone explained that their daughter Erin went missing 18 years ago, and every weekend they still went out— looking, putting up posters, and following up on leads. About a month later we were there again for a Halloween party. The parents were so broken up and were arranging a memorial for Erin. A guy told me that a few weeks ago, Erin was finally found. She was held captive all this time by a man who terrified her, threatened her, and abused her. She was only back with her family for a week before she took her own life, unable to deal with the horrors she experienced. After that the story gained huge traction online and went viral. The world was devastated and everyone was posting “RIP Erin.”
