I'm with a group of friends or a tour group. The beach and surf shop owner is also an eccentric tattoo artist. The short, dark-haired bearded man gives us a tour of the grounds. He only allows people with tatoos to surf there. So I hang out in line with the non-tatted people to get a free small tattoo. There's a cartoonish portrait of him flanked by Homer Simpson and Patrick Star. I'm second in line and realize I don't know what I want. I thought maybe it was artist choice. I remember when I was a kid I wanted a shark tattoo, but I don't anymore. The person in front of me is getting a few black letters on his back, I think. I'm sitting on a bed and look out the window at the beach. The waves are massive, like 8- or 10-foot perfect curls. I've only surfed once, so I think I might die, but what a way to go!
