I am with American soldiers in an urban safe house, watching the four-plex across the street where rebel snipers have discovered our location and are taking shots through the windows with their long guns. Can't blame them but it's scary. I am new here, unsure of protocols, neither American nor a soldier, perhaps visiting a friend. I try to infiltrate the four-plex. The soldiers want to see who is shooting. The shooters are young men, their weathered faces covered with bandanas. A small child steps out to play in the line of fire. I step into the open and shield him, feeling very vulnerable. I coax him to the door he exited and knock. A young woman answers, his mother. She takes him in but is not thankful, never asked for my help. She glares at me. Back at the safe house, a soldier returns with supplies. "Finally, American food!" he says, setting down ziplock bags with saltine crackers, chewing gum and lemon candies. More shots are fired. I step into the back yard, where there is a small shed and hedges to hide behind. It is unsafe here and I want to leave, but are we allowed to run? My friend runs, over the back hedge and into the streets beyond. I run too, fast as I can, following her. Bullets are flying. Then I hear a strange "Whoosh" followed by silence. Deafening silence. Everyone is running. Trees and buildings are glowing and vibrating. Is this a nuclear bomb? Now I know we are allowed to run. My friend gets on a bus but I am too late. I keep running. Have to get as far away from here as possible, if I can. I think of how futile were my actions saving the child when by now, all of them are surely dead. I could have been running.
