The Haven

I found a "haven" in an apocalyptic situation (via "zombies", albeit highly perceptive ones). Its inhabitants were one child (a boy) and, probably, his mother (or a female caretaker of some kind). They were playing loud video games, completely unconcerned with possibly attracting the worst kind of attention, and when I asked, the woman explained to me that one doorway was blockaded "expertly" (it looked to be a cupboard of some kind, albeit a particularly sturdy one) and the other had a gate that was near impossible to open without the proper key (though it didn't appear all that secure, upon conscious second thought). The "haven" itself was a one room location with a large bed, like a crappy apartment, that led into a large mall or shopping district. I believe it was on the first floor, directly across from a couple of escalators. Upon further consideration, it could very well have been some kind of furnishing display. I think this "impenetrable gate" was the kind they close down to protect a store. Either way, despite having no real indication of its supposed safety, I took her words at face value (probably having assumed it to be possibly true, if they had been there as long as they had said, or as long as I had "known", without being concerned about danger). Which begs the question: if it was so impenetrable, how'd they get in? I doubt they were there since the beginning. Anyways, I began to relax for the first time since it had begun, and then someone, someone I either did or didn't recognize (I can't be sure, but I think it was a stranger) had to go and ruin the "haven". As I suspected (or should have) the gate was not a proper safety measure against them, and he began to attract their attention, purposely dooming not only himself, but a child and defenseless woman, for whatever unknown reason (either he didn't say or I don't remember what it was). I was truly worried and scared, mostly for the child, but then, I picked up a blunt, metal tool (probably a wrench or bolt cutters), and began to bash in their heads to protect the child. The last thing I remember is bashing in the last few heads and realizing that the child had been bitten, and that the woman and stranger were nowhere to be seen (from what I remember).
