Last night I had possibly the most horrific and terrifying dream of my life. I should worn you before you continue, if you’re at all affected by the notion of blood and gore, don’t read on. This dream is the only nightmare I’ve ever had that has left me in a cold sweat. In this dream I was sitting at my desk with my best friend looking over my shoulder. She was really excited to show me this new music video that her favorite artist had just put out, and even before she pulled it up on my laptop I knew somehow that I really didn’t want to see it. So I tried to close my computer but she kept forcing it open, smiling and saying “Come on, you’ll like it, I swear”. Reluctantly, I let the video start playing. It was some pop song about being heartbroken, and it started like any other music video. There was a young, attractive man getting out of a car in the middle of a field, standing there singing for a while, and I was just beginning to tell myself that my worrying was useless when the horror began. The video showed the man killing him self, and I mean horribly destroying his body multiple times in anguish. I won’t give full details but it was truly terrifying to watch, mostly because he showed no pain in his face, and every time he “died” he would get back out of the car, only this time his t-shirt covered in dry blood, and do something totally different. The two most disturbing things I watched him do were slash up his own chest with a pocket knife, reach in, and grab his heart in his hand. You couldn’t even tell it was a heart, there was so much blood. The other thing he did was what most likely left me so terrified, since it was a completely original form of harm that stemmed from my own brain. The man was lying on the ground, still singing alone to the lyrics, staring blankly at the sky. Except that in his hand was a fork. He was repeatedly stabbing himself in the stomach with it until there was nothing left to his body. Just a disgusting, jaw dropping mess of blood and ripped flesh. I remember feverishly closing the computer after the video ended, stunned in silence, feeling sick to my stomach and nervous beyond belief. When I turned around, both my bedroom doors were closed, and my best friend was no where to be seen. I just sat there in a panic until it finally woke me up I guess. It was that awful kind of nightmare when your mind keeps saying “wake up, wake up, wake up” but your body is insisting “no, sleep a little more, a little more, a little more”.
