Let Go!!

I was married and had just moved to a new quieter area of the city with my husband and son. We lived there in relative peace until my husband began behaving strangely. He became very quiet and withdrawn, even when his son tried to call out to him which I knew in my heart he would never do because he loved his son more than anything else. He became more and more withdrawn from us as time went on and then went off to work without a word. Later that evening when he didn’t come home I got this sick feeling as our son was out to bed. It was the next morning when I found out he had died in a car accident. My heart broke for my lost love and the child we created who loved his father so much. Our son did it take his death well and began to rebel against me as a result. While all this was going on and older woman had begun watching my son and I. She barely spoke but was everywhere. I asked around about her and people told me she was an old taxi driver and she meant no harm. I kept this in mind but always kept my eye on her whenever she popped up. A few years had gone by and my son was now 14 and had calmed down significantly after having time to process his dads death. But he remembered his odd behaviour leading up to his death and neither of us ever let that go, we would even speak about to make sure it happened. I had to start working later and I hated leaving my son alone at night, especially because for some reason I could not place I felt unsafe in our house. It was like multiple people were always watching us and the only barrier between us and them was the shut doors and windows. It put both me and my son on edge. I gave him cab fare to always make it home before the sun went down and he never diverted from that schedule. Then one evening he called me to ask if he could have a few friends over after school and I said yes just make sure to lock everything up when they leave and when they enter. He obliged and I felt a little better knowing he wasn’t alone because the activity in our house was getting more intense. While my son and his friends were in the living room they began talking about the weird stuff they were all seeing around town and how they were scared but no one ever said anything or talked about it. I walked in the front door to this conversation and told them it was okay and I believed them. They seemed relieved and kept talking about the high number of disappearances in the last couple years. When people said they say the missing people right before they vanished walking blankly into the dark night my son and I looked at each other pale faced. Soon the children went home and it was just us two. I asked my son if he was alright and he said he wanted to move out of this house and out of this town. I told okay and I was already looking and saving for a new place. He hugged me and thanked me for believing him and his friends because no other adult did. I went to the kitchen to cook dinner when I heard every door being pounded on and every window crack. I ran out to see what was happening and it looked like hundreds of people with black eyes and reddish grey skin were trying to force their way into the house! My son ran from his room to me and we watched in horror. Soon they all vanished and items began flying off the shelves of our house and glasses and plates shattered. My son lost it and called someone on his phone. About five minutes later everything had gone silence and I heard honking in our driveway. I looked out the window and saw the old woman who had watched us for years sitting there and my son getting in the back. I ran outside to get him but she drove him away as I screamed for him. I panicked and tried to figure out what to do when my phone rang. I answered the unknown number and it was the cab driver, she said my son was safe but not for much longer and that wasn’t her who came and picked him up but one of the corrupted souls of this land taking him to his father. She told me to meet her at a nearby park before the sun set completely . I ran out of my house and to the park in the growing darkness of the empty streets. I saw a young woman standing at the parks entrance. I said excuse me and the voice I heard back was that of the woman on the phone if she was 40 years younger. “Don’t worry child, it’s me.” She said and told me she was not human but a guardian of this land and her sister used to be as well but allowed herself to be corrupted and has been killing people and enslaving their souls. I asked if that was what happened to my husband and she said yes. She takes the soul first and then kills the body to bind them to her. I asked how I save my son and she said that I needed to let go and he would be saved. I asked her what the fuck that meant and she gave no reply. Just then I heard what sounded like hundred of feet marching all around us and saw those reddish grey skinned people who used to be residents of this town. I felt cold as they approached us and the woman told me not to worry and a light came from her which kept them away. I began hearing screaming from further up the hill and ran to see my son surrounded by the beings. I was too far to get to him in time but I heard my husband say don’t touch him. My husband emerged from the crowd with the same reddish grew skin or subjugation but he was himself again. My son ran into his arms and cried into his father shoulder. The others heard a woman’s cracked voice tell them to take us and immediately they figures were upon my son and husband. I turned to the woman to help me and she she screamed at me to let go over and over. I grew so frustrated I just started screaming. My scream broke car windows, cracked pavement and shook trees. The figures stopped their assault and covered their ears in pain but I continued to scream. I couldn’t stop and then the figures began retreating hastily because those too close to my scream turned to ashes. My husband told my son to run to me and he would see him again when he was completely free. My son nodded and ran to me. I screamed once more and the sun stopped setting and began to rise with the volume of my voice. I fell to my knees and my son came into my arms. We watched all the souls vanish with the suns light and the old woman who was now young put her hand on my head and said “I’ve missed you sister.” I smiled.
