Dream: Beta Scanner

I was a man, early thirties I believe, with immense healing capabilities. Almost like a superpower. Most people called me a "Scanner" as I could gather the information from others like me and use it to help heal people. Or even save them. I was sent on a job to help some people when I'd noticed carnival grounds that were said to be abandoned. Yet something told me there was life there. More so… something told me there was someone in danger there. I had my comrade turn the hover car around and we headed over to the carnival grounds. He seemed very much unhappy with my decision but understood this was how I operated… and you never get between a Scanner and their possible patients. We do have capabilities to do more than just heal. Healing is just our main choice we usually act on. Down by the supposedly abandoned carnival grounds it seemed there was a whole group of people. My first thought was that they might be against each other in a turf war but it seemed more like they were all performers when I looked closer. I walked briskly towards the group once I noticed a woman on the ground. Her ankle looked broken and like she might have landed on it wrong. I knelt beside her as my comrade explained what I was. That was kinda his job. "He's a Scanner. He can help heal your friend." My comrade explained calmly. "We'll I don't need any help from a damned Scanner. Your kind aren't welcome here." The woman on the ground said. She looked to be early twenties. Her hair was blond and matted to her face with sweat. There was some blood on her toes and bruising all around her ankle. "I'll bet you're his Battery pack. Too much energy to hold so you latch onto him to take it away the way he'll leech off you after healing." She wasn't wrong exactly. A Scanner's healing ability can be draining. Every Scanner needs a Battery to do the bigger heals like malignant illnesses or fatal wounds. Battery people, like my comrade, create immense amounts of energy that can make them practically go nuclear if they don't have something or someone to siphon it through. They need people like Scanners to give their excess energy to. "Miss, if you allow me to assist you then it'll make it easier for you to perform again." I explained as I lowered my hand near her ankle. She looked up to a couple men. They nodded to her and she bit her lower lip. "On with it then." I nodded and lightly touched her foot. My system gained information on her current physical status and I was correct. She had broken her ankle. However, there was more. There was a second heartbeat and it was more rapid than it should have been. I healed her ankle and sent a gentle energy up to the child in her womb, calming it and healing any damage. "Please be more careful. For their sake and yours." I stated calmly, but sternly. She could read the hidden meaning almost instantly and nodded. "I had planned on that already." We stayed with the group for a few days. I helped heal their sick and elderly in their group as much I could each day. It was draining my energy. My comrade would push some of his own energy in me when he saw me start to struggle at points.  I stumbled back a bit into my comrade's arms as we made our way back to the hover car. He looked down at me with worry. "Beta, are you alright?" He asked me. It was the name I'd given myself since I had been given up at a young age. The place that took me in had nothing to call me so I told them my name was Beta. Something easy to remember.  "No worries Avery. I'll be ok after a short bit of sleep." I told him. Avery just nodded and lifted me up in his arms. He carried me to our hover car and gently laid me down on the back seat. "Then rest. I'll check in with those you've treated so far." I grabbed his wrist. "Synch on?" Avery pressed his wrist to mine and I could feel a tinge of worry and guilt. "Synch is on. You'll see all that happens to me. Keep yourself safe." I nodded, laid back down, and closed my eyes. "Thank you Avery." "Rest well, Beta." He said before shutting the door, locking it, then heading off. Far later Avery came back. He awoke me as I stared up at a woman. One in her early fifties but looked strong and defiant. Her face though, it set off multiple red flags in my mind. She was someone the previous Scanners had marked as a threat. Someone dangerous to my kind. Just as I could gather information for healing from other Scanners in the web… I could also gain information on threats. As well as memories from recently deceased. This woman had killed many of my kind, forcing their Battery comrades to go off in a self-destructive and suicidal manner. I had to keep her away from Avery and I somehow. "This woman here is the ringleader of that carnival group." Avery told me, "She wanted to thank you for helping her group so much." "It was a pleasure. Just doing what I can to help others." I told her but inside I was screaming to Avery to send her off. Wishing that he could hear me so we could get the hell outta here. That was when I woke up.
