I got a new job in a lab where Gavin was the manager. He was showing me around and stuff. We went into a room where the light, which flickered as we walked in, was like a sickish yellow and everything was painted cream so it was kind of nauseating to be in - but it seemed like his favourite room. The room had a whole lot of tanks on shelves that lined the walls all around. I went closer to view one of the tanks; they were all covered on all sides to block any light going in, but whatever they were covered with also acted as a monitor to what was inside the tank. He said it was to keep them in eternal night. He took me to one of the tanks to view what was happening in the inside nighttime. Suffice it to say I was quite horrified at what I saw. My limbs felt like they were breaking and cracking and squelching and healing over and over again as I looked on, and in a split second I felt my consciousness leave my body and travel to the edge of the universe and back, giving me an experience of inertia. There were these horribly clawed exoskeletal creatures, kind of like crabs, but more terrifying in that some of them had extra eyes, or extra claws, or just random growths that did not seem conducive to life. I felt all sense of knowing creep away from my being, though I could not stop looking at them with fascination. A number of them were standing in a circle while in the center of the circle was another creature - maybe a rat? - that was soft and fleshy. The ratty was clearly in panic trying to escape the circle of crabbies that was clawing at it: slicing here, cutting there, chopping off a nose, poking out an eye. As I was watching I had started to cry. It felt...wrong. These creatures did not belong here. I asked where they sourced the genetic material from and he said that only executive members get an audience with the donor. He smiled slyly and I felt a chill run down my spine. Done with the room, we walked back out and into the passage way where a man passed us, he was tall with thick curly black hair and a mischievous smile. He winked at me. Flushed, I turned my attention to whatever it was that Gavin was saying. I couldn't repeat it if I tried, I felt lightheaded. He took me to the next room, which was my bedroom. Apparently employees were required to live onsite - I didn't find this weird at all. The bedroom was quite uh pink. Like a hotel room. A badly decorated hotel room. The bed was high above the ground and covered with a satin dusty pink duvet (gross, I'll be sweating so much - I thought); the walls were a very pale salmon pink and opposite the bed was a TV on a dark wooden stand with what looked like a DVD player and some books. There was a certain chill in the room, like something was out of place but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Gavin was reading an itinerary of my duties for the next day while I wad laying on the bed with my eyes closed. When I opened my eyes Gavin was gone and Kaelin was asleep on the bed next to me with his head resting on my left thigh. What was he doing here? And why are there no windows in this room? I turned to the right to inspect my surroundings further, and the man from the hallway was laying next to me, smiling at me. I smiled back. How big is this bed I thought comically. "It's a shame you have to share a room with this child, I could make you feel more comfortable." His voice was smooth like warm honey - not one I'd expect to find in a place like this where every room was as uninvitingly cold as the last. "This child is my nephew, I'm quite okay thanks." I answered quizzically. "Ohhhh apologies. I didn't know. That doesn't mean you can't still visit me in my room." "Well," I answered softly, "I will need someone to help me adjust." I blushed heavily as the words came out. At this point I felt quite pulled towards him. Compelled to know who this person is. I let my right arm lay next to me on the bed, and he slipped his hand into mine as he brought his face over me. His dark charcoal black eyes looked tired, but welcoming. Waves of heat rolled over me, and I couldn't move to evade what was coming next even if I wanted to. It was as if I was locked in place. And as his face lowered to meet mine, I felt a familiar sensation - as if all sense of self had left my body and scattered to the furthest reaches of a long cold night. END.
