Votive Offering

I’m standing on a wharf fashioning a figurine out of seaweed and driftwood. I’m speaking with an older woman. I drop the figurine into the ocean, like an offering or a sacrifice but without ceremony. The woman climbs down the steps and picks the figure from the water, she is very conventional and finds it disturbing. She takes it apart, dropping the pieces back and sea and says that “People shouldn’t appropriate tribal ritual”. I’m thinking that stupid all people to tribal no matter how modern they seem…
