I was in the back seat of a car driving through the city. It was sunset, the sky was half dark and cloudy. It was rather cold. When the car ran pass the skyscrapers, I could see a rounded-shape hole in the sky, it was gigantic and gave off a feeling like it was brutally but perfectly torn off. The dim light shined through but it felt like ice. Then the rain started to pour. It was so heavy that everything became white. The thunder just kept screaming in the air and the lightning torn down the clouds. It was frightening. After a while, the rain did not show any sign of stopping but it was only getting worse. The rain started to spread to other parts of the city and the lightnings were striking onto the buildings. My car was moving faster on the road, trying to avoid being strike. Suddenly, a building in the distance started to crack and fell on it side. Then came the second building, then third... just like dominos. I could hear screaming and felt the panic of all the people on the road. However, the only thing I had on my mind was that my university was located under the light hole in the sky. And I should be there right then. I entered the university, it was quiet as always. I rushed to the laboratory where I usually work at. I slide open the door and saw some of my friends. They were surprised to see me but immediately turned into fear. They pulled me in the room and closed the door behind my back. I did not ask anything because somehow I had already “knew” what was happening. Before we had a chance to have an informative conversation, we heard some sounds in the next room. It was some weird footsteps sounds and the sounds of glass equipments bumped into each others. Everyone panicked, they quickly hid under the desks. Luckily, the desks we had in this laboratory were the ones with solid sides instead of four small legs. One of my friend pulled me in together with him under a desk and told me to be quiet. It was dead silence after that. The sounds in the next room still continues but it was coming closer to the door connected the two rooms. Then we heard the door swung open. The footsteps were louder and clearer than before, together with the heavy breathing. For sure, that thing was not human. Everyone waited and hoped that it would not find them. But then it stopped right in front of me and my friend. I could see the fear in his eyes and the frightening look on the face of the two hid right opposite us. The monster’s legs have a dark color and just bare skin with out fur or scales. They looked rough and ugly with huge claws on both feet. With out a warning, the monster put its “front limb” under the opposite desk and grabbed one person and it squeezed her so hard, its sharped claws sliced onto her skin and almost chopped off her arm. I heard the screaming and my friend was so scared, he unconsciously leaned onto me. I put my hand in my pocket and grabbed onto the first thing I touched. Then after it left my pocket, it immediately turned into a long chain attached with multiple small blades, I swung it. The monster legs were sliced off easily like paper. I grabbed my friend then pulled him outside. The monster fell onto the ground. I swung the chain again and cut it into pieces. We got blood everywhere and two dead bodies. But that was not the end. The game had just begun. I finally understood the law: “Do whatever you can to survive until the next stage.” We were chessmans and this fallen city was the chessboard.
