Dream: The Space Between

A world between worlds. A place where two versions of oneself can meet and learn from one another. A place where those connected across time and space can interact on the same plane. A place far more dangerous than it appeared on the surface. I awoke in this place. It was dark, save a few tiki torches lit up around the garden-like place I'd appeared in. On the edges of the garden were giant skeletal statues that looked like wraiths or like varying depictions of Death. An almost foreboding sense appeared in me as I got to my feet. Near me were two other people who looked similar to my friends Chris and Mara. They were also just getting to their feet in a near daze. I walked to them and they nodded. I held a hand out to each and they took them, holding tight like I was their lifeline. "Where are we?" Chris asked me, sensing I had some ideas. I gave his hand a squeeze, "I'm not 100% sure but I think we're in the Space Between. Neither the waking realm or the dream realm. Somewhere else. Somewhere... Much darker." Mara gulped quietly. I gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "Clasp each other's free hands. I'll move us somewhere a little brighter." I told them, hoping I could pull this off. They did as told and I closed my eyes, envisioning the brighter place. The hopefully safer place. ------------------ Suddenly, we were in a house. Outside it, were elegant angel-like statues. Yet the foreboding feeling didn't go away. Chris and Mara let go of my hands. In that instant, I heard what sounded like a faint "pop" and saw them both fade away. As I looked where they had stood, in the distance appeared a man with what looked like a rifle. I wanted to scream at him for killing my friends but a big part of my brain was warning me... Saying what he did wasn't murder... Telling me that those statues I kept seeing were the real danger. He blinked in surprise as I held his gaze but then vanished from sight. ----------------------- I ended up being stuck in the house for a while. I couldn't say how long. A month? Two months? Time moved differently and the days blurred. I did learn very fast that my suspicions about the statues were right. Those who stayed out in the dark too long would get sliced in half or otherwise killed by the statues. I could only use my teleport ability so much. Some I had managed to save and bring inside this house... That seemed to grow on the inside more and more as I brought in each person I saved. Because of my teleport ability, I was held in high regard in the house. A woman named Irene, who had some kind of foresight ability, often mind-linked with me to help me bring more people into this safe haven. It wasn't till later that I learned I wasn't the only one seeing the images she'd send me. --------------------- More time passed. Months I believe. It all kind of blurs together. Each day bleeding into the next. Intruders barged onto our property. Some out on the yard. Some forced their way inside. I worked with our foresight person to keep our people from being captured. But then we learned about the hidden thread. The man who could see everything I saw. Darren Ashford. Or Dash as he was often called by his team. The ones intruding into the safe haven. "You're an idiot." He told me, keeping a firm grasp on my arm so that if I teleported... Well he'd be going with me. "What makes you so sure?" I did my best to bite back my rage at this assault. "This isn't a safe haven. It's a tomb." He was quick. Placed some special kind of cuff on my wrist and the other on his own. Indefinitely binding us until he chose to release the cuffs. "Explain." I snarled as I watched as his team moved more and more of my people to the attic of our safe haven. They'd take turns using their rifle looking weapons and shooting my comrades. "This world, the Space Between, isn't safe for mortals. It's a battleground for the worst monstrosities imaginable. And this home is like a perfect waiting space to let food ripen with 'hope' before being devoured." Dash told me before one of his comrades aimed a gun at Irene. "Don't you fucking dare! She can help!" I snapped at his teammate. Dash looked between me and Irene. "Miss Foresight, I take it." I glared at him. He smirked. "We aren't killing them. We made these weapons to help untether the soul from the Space Between. Their souls end up back in their worlds. In their actual bodies." His teammate, Avery I believe, explained coldly. Irene looked at him then mind-linked me and showed me... It was all true. "I don't just see the future Marko. But they speak truths," She looked at Avery, "But I can help you stop this from continuing. Both of us can. If you let us." A faint light was lit. Dash and his team removed their night vision goggles. Dash was about 5'7" (about my height) and toned. Messy short sandy hair. Piercing dark eyes. He held an air of defiance but beneath it was a somber feeling. A burden.  "We all have our own crosses to bear." A quote my mother and grandmother used to say when things got hard... But his cross was clearly far heavier than any of mine had been. I could feel it. He'd seen death, stared it down, and waited for his anticipated end. Only for it to pass him by and strike down everyone he loved. "Soul bond." Irene told me. Dash and I stared each other down as she continued. "When two across time are connected by fate... A soul bond. Only place to truly meet is in dreams... Or a place like this." Irene looked to Avery, "You've seen it before." "Only once. Before them." The older man admitted. He looked to be in his early fifties but he was built like a gladiator. Definitely wouldn't want to brawl with him. "You shot my friends when I first appeared here..." I stated, staring Dash down. "Yes. I would have shot you as well but I was recalled. I can't teleport on demand like you can." He grimaced, as if admitting it was a weakness. I just rolled my eyes. ----------------------------------------------------------- That night was one of the longest. As it dragged on we all took turns keeping watch. Two people a shift. One from Dash's team and one from mine. I don't remember much else in detail. There were scavengers sent to chase some of us out. Once people were chased out the angel statues and wraith statues would swoop in and eat them. We had to survive the night to take them down in the daylight... When they were just statues... Something happened to get Irene, Avery, Dash, and I separated from the rest of our teams.  (And then I awoke.)

The dreamer finds themselves in a dangerous and unfamiliar place, the 'Space Between'. They are accompanied by two friends, who they are able to help and protect with their ability to teleport. This could represent the dreamer's inner strength and willingness to help and protect those they care about. The dreamer then encounters a man with a rifle, which could symbolize danger and potential destruction. However, the dreamer quickly realizes that the statues surrounding them are the real danger and not the man.
