Mountain Toll Gate

There was a part where I was with two of my friends, and we sort of slid down a shallow creekbed in a hillside. It was fun. After that, I remember a huge amount of pelicans that flew in and landed in the backyard at dad's house. All the grass and the bushes were dead and dried up, and now there were thousands of pelicans sitting everywhere. We conjectured that they flew in from some lake somewhere, and that the lake must not be in the best condition for them all to migrate like this. I thought I should go to Mom's house and check on how things were going, so I set off. I came to the mountain pass, which was heavily guarded. All the mountains were heavily guarded like this, because they were the first place an escaped criminal could pass through after falling from one of the sky prisons. The guy in the checkpoint looked at my licence and was going to wave me through when he said "have a good trip, and tell your mom I said hi." I stopped and asked him how he knew I was going to visit my mom, and he told me that he had deduced it. I was very interested in learning how he did this, so I followed him around inside the huge mountain facility for a while, to try and ask him how he did it. He never told me, except for one thing: I had mentioned my mom in a sort of off-hand manner, and he thought that anyone going through the mountains that late would need a good reason to do so.
