I’m accompanying my brother to a school meeting to discuss accommodations for school. A stern lady greets us and we sit down on the table. “Where were you born?” The lady asks Gary. “Loma Linda.” I answered for him. The lady then glowered at me menacingly. “I didn’t ask you.” She snaps. “Yes,” Gary replied coolly, “I was born in Loma Linda.” The lady smiled at my brother and began to write things down on her notepad. “What can I help you with today?” She asks us. “My brother is having trouble with math, and we were wondering if—“ “What do you know? You’re probably in special education!” The lady yells at me. At this point, I’m enraged by her harsh and discriminatory behavior. “Excuse me, I’ll have you know that I am a graduate of San Jacinto High School in GENERAL EDUCATION.” I remarked to her, “I am actually very intelligent, and I refuse to be treated in this matter!” The lady’s eyes widened with shock at my tone of voice. And that’s when I woke up.
