I was a young man still honing their psionic powers. If I concentrated hard enough I could make a hoverboard of pure energy or an invisible weapon. However there was another person with better psionic capabilities than I had. His name was Vasric and he fought for the rights of those with abilities who didn't use them for harm. He was my idol because of this. Yet, despite all that he always gave off this feeling of being alone. No matter how many people he was around… it always felt like I was watching a lonely king. Through small acts I'd followed his example. I'd taken in a young pup that had the power gene. He could morph himself into other dog breeds when he felt threatened but his base form was a little corgi. He could also enhance his vocal cords so he could sound more vicious or communicate with me in small doses. I spoke with him and we got him a tag with the name of Rex. He wanted to show his true ferocity in his name. I'd also adopted into my home two young girls. One with the cryokinetic power gene who was fairly skilled but had a slight temper. Her name was Kori. The other had the aerokinetic power gene. She was far more level headed. She was Libby. You'd never know from how they act that they weren't sisters before this adoption. They were 14 and 15 respectively and both loved Rex to no end. He'd certainly become the family dog. In time we got another dog. She had the power gene but it was a surprise as she didn't seem much different than your average corgi. Minus occasionally being able to speak to us like Rex. She chose her name to be Eliza. My home now had three females and two males. It was an entertaining situation. I was also apparently a "cool dad" because I want embarrassed or embarrassing when I'd be the "feminine things" as my girls called it. I even helped them find out the right ones for their needs and got them both specific baskets for their needs. We worked with the abilities of both girls, and Rex, in the woods near the house so they could learn to control them and not fear them. A couple years passed and one night our doorstep had been met by an unconscious man barely being held up by a woman not much older than my girls. The woman seemed desperate but Rex wasn't growling at her and neither was Eliza. So I let the two in and we headed to the kitchen. As the young woman set her comrade in a chair I felt my heart stop for a moment. Those long brown dreads and bright electric blue eyes were unmistakable. It was Vasric. The man I'd chosen to look to as a guide in life. He was a mess. He was bloodied and bruised. "Kori, think you could--" I barely got the words out before she was forming thin layers of ice over his bruises to help lessen the pain while we grabbed some of the med supplies. "Do you know him?" Libby asked me while Tax morphed into a pitbull and stood watch of the house inside. The woman's eyes widened at Rex's morph but she shrugged it off a bit. "His name is Vasric. He's someone I've looked up to for a long time. I don't know him personally but I know what he's been fighting for… which is the rights of those with the power gene." I explained and smiled to Libby, "Those like us." The woman finally seemed to relax at those words, "I'm Lynn. I'm his niece. He saved my life and in the process… well this happened. I don't know all the details but we just finally got away from our followers about 20 minutes before reaching your door." I nodded as I cleaned up the blood on him and stitched a couple of deeper cuts. He seemed to be okay though. I could still hear the passive thoughts in his mind. He was certainly trying to keep his niece safe. The next couple days were spent with the household on guard. Rex kept to the pitbull form most of the time. I sent my girls to school with their cellphones kept on vibrate in case we needed to reach each other. Eliza stayed by Lynn. Holding small conversations with her here and there. I kept watch over Vasric as he rested. By the end of the fourth day he finally awoke. Lynn had been resting in Libby’s room. Libby and Kori were sharing Kori’s room. I had Vasric taking my bed while i’d been sleeping on the couch. If anyone would hear someone coming it’d be me. “You can lower your guards a bit, Shion.” Came Vasric’s voice from the stairwell. “I have two teenage daughters, a morphing dog, and two runaways in my home. Not as easy as you might think.” I told him with a smirk, “Reading my mind without my permission, while a guest in my home no less, not very polite.” “Just to get a name and be sure it wasn’t a dangerous home.” Vasric stated as he sat across from me on a chair, “Though no need to act like we’re strangers.” He snickered but then cringed as he stretched a bit on the chair. I watched him and shook my head, “We never actually got close either. We were from different worlds back then. I helped run Surge to keep kids like my girls in good homes. You ran in the big campaigns as a major activist for our kind. I’m sure our paths only crossed a few times but nothing major.” Vasric shook his head and held a hand out to me. Ice skated across his fingers and formed into smaller versions of us. Showing us passing each other by and also showing him glancing back to watch me as I worked. I looked away from him at that and shook my head. “My work with Surge was important. We were the main line between keeping those with the power gene off the streets. You were the politician up in the stands and we were the medics and soldiers keeping the afflicted very much alive.” I told him and sighed, “Though I guess the roles reversed after I got Rex and started having an actual family.” “It does seem that way. They stopped listening to me. My sister and brother-in-law did better with the politics. They’ve gotten closer to freeing out a reservation of sorts. Getting some land for those with the power gene to live on safely from the crosshairs.” Vasric explained and faded the ice imagery away. “Shion, can we try and start over?” “As friends instead of just allies in a cause?” I asked him, trying to clarify. “I’d prefer that. Maybe more in time.” Vasric stated with a smirk. I rolled my eyes, “Don’t push your luck.” I rose to my feet and got some coffee brewing. “Best get some energy in us. Today will be a long one.” “Why do you say that?” Vasric asked as he followed me. “Can’t you feel it?” I asked him as the tension in the air got worse, “Your enemies will be searching here soon. We will need to be gone by then.” “I agree. There is a faint stench of blood in the air.” Rex said from his post by the door. As the coffee brewed, I heated up some diced pork and then put it in Rex's dish with some of his dog food. "Eat up. You'll need the extra energy as well. Vasric watched us and grimaced as he sat back down. "So what do you want me to do?" "For now I'd suggest thin layers of ice over your bruises to keep the swelling down. Some of them may be gone but not all." I told him, "After that I'll need to get your measurements so we can get you a better change of clothes that actually fit." "Hey, sweatpants and hoodies are fine." Vasric stated, pointing out my gym clothes he was wearing. "Maybe so but you'll need more than one outfit. We'll be traveling for a bit till we get things handled." I explained and poured the coffee into two mugs. I handed him his then held the other out to Lynn as she sleepily walked into the kitchen. "Thank you, Shion." She mumbled through her yawn. Vasric blinked as he watched the exchange. I made my cup of coffee and began on the tea for Kori and Libby. "You're starting to outdo me as a Psionic." Vasric said with a wry grin. "I don't have to be a Psionic to catch on to sleep patterns and tastes. Most of that is pure observation." I told him with a shrug. Vasric just nodded and watched as I started on breakfast. It didn’t take long before Kori, Libby, and Eliza came into the kitchen. I set down a bowl of dog food mixed with chicken bits for Eliza and handed over two mugs of spiced chai for my girls. Kori immediately chilled both mugs just enough so they wouldn’t burn their tongues. I got everyone some pancakes, eggs, and bacon so we could get the day going with enough energy. We left with a week’s worth of clothes each and piled into an RV I’d been modifying from a few tanks and old RV’s. Basically made an armored RV with the ability to shoot back against the enemy. Not that we really needed it with the powers we had on our side but it certainly helped. We got halfway across the country with what supplies we could. Then I awoke.
