Where We Belong

The beginning of this dream is vague in my memories now, but I know for sure that there was a girl who found a way to go back and forth between the world where she was born and another world altogether. Both worlds had magic. On her original world, her magic was something that bothered her for some reason. In the other world, it made her feel like she fit in with everyone else. She lived with a family of potters and easily made friends with powerful people. Her relationships and bonds had all felt fake in her original world, but here she could genuinely get along with people in a casual way that made her feel comfortable. She even started dating a prince, I think. She was on a date with him in a fancy restaurant where elevators -- an extremely new invention using equally new magic -- had just been installed. It was among the first buildings to have elevators at all. Something went wrong and they started breaking down in a way that affected the whole building. Evacuating and rescuing people was quick and efficient with a lot of powerful people in the restaurant, the girl included. She didn't feel like there was any undue pressure on her at all, just that things were getting done. She wanted to redo her date with the prince once everything was over at the restaurant, because they'd been understanding each other really well. She felt grateful to be in this place, and told the potters as much when she got home. The next part of the dream felt like it was set in the same world. This time it focused on a guy who had come back to a relatively small town after being away for awhile. He ended up finding out that the local school teacher was the girl he'd been in love with before he'd left. He hadn't told her his feelings before leaving, so despite his tough guy exterior (he was like those anime characters who have a thin body but an intimidating default expression) he got very shy about seeing her. He ended up at her school for some reason and was going to talk to her. At the last moment, he chickened out and fled to the hallway outside the classroom. He was wearing a yellow dinosaur onesie with a hood over his normal clothes for some reason, so it was easy for the teacher's son to follow him and confront him. Like all her students, the teacher's son was about 6 or 7 years old. He didn't look very much like her, having inherited just enough traits that you could tell he was her biological son but mostly looking like whomever his father was. He marched down the hallway and cut off the onesie guy's path. He got a little angry, telling him that he shouldn't run away. Onesie guy got shy again, this time insisting that it would be inappropriate for him to say he loved her when she was married with a kid. The son rolled his eyes and said that just because she had a son, it didn't automatically mean she was married. She hadn't been married for a long time. It was implied that she had been divorced soon after her son was born, and nobody had seen the kid's father since then. It was also implied that in the time since onesie guy's return, the local kids had decided that they approved of him and shipped him with their teacher. The teacher's son especially supported this guy, his mom's long lost love, and told him as much. He zipped up the rest of the guy's onesie so it covered up his otherwise normal outfit, which was when onesie guy flipped up the hood of the onesie to hide his flustered expression at the thought of going back in there and telling the truth. The kid basically demanded that he go back in there anyway, embarrassed or not. Eventually, the kid's persuasion won and onesie guy followed him back into the classroom. The teacher had already paused what she'd been showing the class on the projector. She was just standing behind her desk with a knowing smirk, waiting for the guy who'd always been too shy to talk to her about anything serious. She had a bit more of a classic movie-style librarian look to her than a teacher look, but the kids respected her just the same. She crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow and waited for him to speak while all the children sat quietly in their seats to watch. After several struggling, stuttering moments where he repeatedly pulled his hood down over his eyes to avoid having her see him blush, onesie guy finally got the confession out that he'd been holding back all this time. The teacher smiled when he finally said that he'd been in love with her and was more in love with her now after returning. She reached out to him and pulled him close in a tight hug, then let up just enough to tug his hood so it partially covered both their faces. With their mouths, at least, hidden from the kids she gave him a light kiss on the lips. He was dazed for a second before whispering a question about what level of kissing they could get away with using the hood as cover, which made her laugh. The kids all cheered because their ship was together and their teacher was happy. News of them getting together spread through town very quickly, and for awhile after that parents of the teacher's students would take turns observing classes just to make sure the new couple wasn't doing anything inappropriate in front of the kids. They never were, and everyone knew they were more considerate of the kids than that. Still, the playful suspicion had an odd way of making onesie guy feel more accepted by the community than he had been back before he'd left town. He felt like everyone approved of not only his relationship, but also him as a person. Even when they were going through the school supplies he'd gifted his girlfriend, to make sure he hadn't slipped in any love notes or anything. It was a little exasperating, but mostly the couple just found it funny. Of course they kept their love notes in their own home, why wouldn't they? It's a weird thing for the community to have been concerned about in retrospect, but in the dream itself I'd agreed with the couple and found it all very endearing. It was a heartwarming dream, as much as it was a slightly odd one for me. Until next I wander.
