Not Planet of the Apes

Lived on an island with a group of people. Decided we wanted to find a way off the island. Swam across a straight separating the island we were on to a smaller island. When we got there we found signs of our ancestors. Turns out they had been stranded on the island and gave up hope that they were going to be rescued so they moved to the bigger island and established a colony there which became the group I was a part of.
