Stealing a car

I visited a guy I liked at his house. He was there with his girlfriend but they took pity on me and let me hang out for a bit so it wasn’t awkward. Then I left but I realized I didn’t have a car, so I took the guy’s dad’s car keys and drove the car away. I was backing out of the driveway and hit something. The car was completely dented and scraped. I drove away anyway. Then I came back because I suppose I realized i needed to return the car. When I got back the dad was there with the police and they were about to arrest me. I feel like I had a legitimate reason for doing this and knew I wasn’t going to get in trouble but now I can’t remember why.
