The setting was a large city. I was helping out at a summer event and one of the chamber of commerce members asked me if I’d like to get paid for a reenactment of a major historic event. The event was the chase from Bonnie and Clyde, ending at the city center. She told me that I’d be paired with a girl who is a professional stunt driver and that the city was doing this reenactment to unveil a new monument in a colorful and spectacular way. I agreed and soon after was introduced to the girl portraying Bonnie. I never learned her real name, nor did I recognize her. We got our costumes and went over the plan with some members of the city council as well as state reps and other unknown but seemingly important figures. For the first part, Bonnie and I were instructed to take the getaway car provided and reenact a bank robbery. The experience felt so real. We held the place up, gathered the money, and escaped to the getaway car. Soon after, cops were in pursuit and Bonnie was driving. We led them throughout the city, leaving destruction in our wake. It was the most exhilarating experience I can recall. We were laughing the whole time because we couldn’t believe how much fun and how much they put into the reenactment. When we got to the city center, the plaza and sidewalks were flooded with people. We were instructed to ditch the car and blend into the crowd which would prove to be nearly impossible. As I looked up, I saw our faces with “wanted” signs on billboards. One of the chamber members walked me through the crowd and I was met with a lot of cheer and praise. As we approached the main stage at the plaza center, I was taken down and arrested by several officers. The crowd erupted with cheer. One of the officers whispered in my ear “You have no idea how f*cked you are.” I said well we’re doing better than the original Bonnie and Clyde, that’s for sure and laughed. Then he asked me if I thought this was a game. I said “yeah, basically. I can’t wait to see the unveiling of the new art installation” The cop told me I had a sick sense of humor and began taking me to the stage. Bonnie was up there as well, also in handcuffs. She smiled at me and I smiled and nodded back. The city official began explaining how they were so proud to catch these two “extremely dangerous criminals” and referred to us as the “new age Bonnie and Clyde”. She went on to explain that we would be serving life sentences and paying restitution for our crimes following conviction. At this point I was entirely confused. Suddenly a man in a suit with a purple tie came rushing through the crowd and onto the stage. He said that he was my lawyer and demanded that both I and Bonnie be released immediately. We were released from the handcuffs and he took us to a restaurant in a secluded spot. He told us that the whole thing was a setup to demonstrate that people could be convinced to do anything in pursuit of fame and recognition. The crimes we committed were real, but key city officials were in on it. Everyone else was unaware. He outlined his plan to expose the city officials and get us freed from legal trouble. I thought it was all an elaborate joke, but he got very serious and told us we needed to trust him. He ordered a round of drinks for us and continued. He said that we were perfect for the experiment because we were both young and building promising futures. It would be a shocking twist for their story. Questions continued but I don’t remember them. Later we were in court and the lawyer presented evidence that city officials influenced us to rob a bank and lead police on a dangerous chase under the muse of a reenactment. The courtroom gallery was shocked at the events taking place. In the end, the judge ruled in our favor and we were released. The city official who was speaking on stage in the city center was handcuffed and led away. I never found out who the lawyer was, or Bonnie for that matter. When we left the courthouse, I could tell I was being followed. I started running and ducked into an alley. A black car followed down the alley. I jumped up to grab a fire escape ladder and began climbing so I wouldn’t get hit, then I dropped down and ran out in the opposite direction of the car. I ran to a nearby abandoned building and the car pulled in. I started climbing the building and got to the roof. The man in the car followed. I was traversing the rooftop, avoiding holes and sharp rusted metal. I got to a flat spot and he followed shortly after. He reached for his handgun and I threw a piece of metal at him which knocked it out of his hand. I was already following up with an attack. We began fighting hand to hand and he pulled out a knife. I grabbed a pipe from the roof. After a few exchanges, I got slashed across the arm but I managed to hit him with the pipe and disorient him. I kept hitting him with the pipe and knocked him down but he kept trying to get up. I could tell I was running out of energy and I hit him several more times, then drove the pipe into his head with the jagged end. At that point, I thought he was finished but his last words were “This isn’t over. We’ll catch up to you.” I kicked him off the side of the building and woke up .
