I started a new job, which I was excited for, but it was my first day and pretty much no one would talk to me. I was getting really disheartened because it wasn't looking like I was going to enjoy this job. Later, one of the other girls that worked there took me and anyone else who was new out to lunch, because she felt bad that we all felt so alone. This one guy opened up to us about how everything is. His life was going horribly and his girlfriend was leaving him and all this stuff. I felt really bad for him so I came over and put a hand on his shoulder telling him that we cared about him. He said "yeah, but it still hurts" So I said "I know, and I'm not saying that our caring will make it hurt any less. All I'm saying is that we acknowledge your struggle, and we acknowledge how hard you've worked to get where you are. We see you, we are here for you, and we aren't going anywhere." He felt a bit better after that, and stopped crying. Some of the other coworkers said some nice words too and he felt good enough that he ate his three bowls of mushroom soup. (It was literally just mushrooms in mushroom juice)
