A friend of mine has turned into a dog. I'm outside of my University, which looks like there the community center is by punta carretas shopping. I've got my cat with me and joke to him that at least people are used to me having animals. I take his leash and we walk back to my house. On my way, i stop by another place. There's a person here of no particular gender with shirt blonde hair who tries on outfit after outfit, each one loud and bright. They've got a partner and go out to show them the outfits from time to time. I compliment them on the outfit and realize how insecure they feel as they nearly cry at the compliment. They offer me an outfit and hand me a glass jar filled with crayons that are thin like metal rods until you take them out. I go into another room to color with a blonde girl on the floor. She gets close to me and mentions she's sick. I back away and she looks offended. She says she told me she tested negative but she's still not wearing a mask and I don't want to get sick anyway. I leave to go back home. I go into my room at home and him and the cat are no longer here. It's pouring and I'm watching the rain from my bedroom window. There's a double doored one that opens to the inside and is covered with paper like the one i have in real life. There's a screen that i have a few things resting against and i worry they'll fall through the hole torn along the bottom. Water washes by outside in a kind of storm drain under a concrete tunnel. I'm watching at first as if I had no glasses on. Eventually, i see two tortoises like my first pet washing down with the water. I think of how horrible it must be for them and watch them go by. In a sudden burst of action, i realize it doesn't have to be that way. I jump through the screen on my window and into the knee deep water to save them. One's a male and the other female. I struggle as i catch one and the other rushes further under the water, but eventually get that one too. I try to get the water from their lungs by holding them upside down and tapping their bellies. They're looking okay now. I bring them to the yard of my house and go in through the sliding glass doors to chop them some veggies. I'm thinking carrot and peppers. Manu comes in to ask about them and i say they're the same kind as my first pet. They won't grow any bigger and I'll take them in as my pets. He goes outside to greet his mom and Alphonso who have just come in. I'm about to open the door when he comes and says not to bring the food. I ask why and he refuses to explain. He tells me to look myself. Next to the door, i find both tortoises dead with a perfect hole through their shells piercing from one side to the other, through their hearts. Alphonso laughs with Manu's mom about having done it, just because he could. No reason and no empathy. I go outside and scream until my throat's raw about the incomprehensible lack of empathy for any living creature but himself. I can't fathom it. I leave him, them, and I'm not coming back. I don't care if manu knows that this is why I'm ending things with even him. I'm not going to be around people like this again. I go off to work now, taking a route around the new development. There was a little tunnel that kids could play in around the sidewalk but half had been closed and is in a state of disrepair. I speak to a woman i pass as i walk and i tell her about it. She wonders if they'll ever reopen the whole thing again, as do I. Being that there aren't as many kids now, we're not sure it will. I go with my boss and the owner of the company to demo with someone who's offering us loan calculation software. At least, that's what we need. However, when we get into the office, he starts trying to sell us cars. I try to get him back on track and he continues. I joke we'll be calculating loans with calculators inside of a lincoln at this rate. My boss compliments me on the joke and my quick wit. I adjust my hat, navy blue and official seeming, flipping the brim up towards the top in a show of my authority.
