Thinking about orbits around the earth

I am looking at an black and white image of the earth with satellites that orbit around it. I could see in which orbit they are. I am thinking which are logical and could really be orbits. I see one not so obvious one, but another one was super obvious: It has an orbit where it almist touches the earth, then goes up in space, then back to earth. As if it orbits around a small ball just outside the atmosphere.
