New Opportunities to Disappoint

I was living in this attic room high above everyone in a nice mansion house. There was a distinct problem I had to attend with, almost like a monster in the darkness, some dark monster thing. The government was paying my rent for a while as I was in pain, but the monster was alive and well and controlled everything. Downstairs the house was fully of people, most were nice. One woman, some young thing with white blonde hair was utterly crazy. She screamed and attacked verbally and broke things. The police were often called, well whomever the government was, and for some reason the rest of the house hold protected her. I was to being paying rent, 500 a week soon. They offered to let me stay in the attic apartment or move to a wooden wine in the downstairs. I wanted to move to the nicer one but they seemed to want me to stay upstairs so I did. There was a contract I had to look at several times. I hated it and just reviewed it. It didn't need me to sign anything anyway. There was a mouse in the floor boards of my upstairs apartment and he was my friend. And there was a chipmunk in the house which I could pet. The dog I had upstairs gave birth to a single puppy then strained like it was giving birth to more inside. I encouraged her to push, sadly knowing if there was another it would be stillborn, but instead she pushed out three ball shapes things. A few were benign but one was a bomb. Terrified I checked it to see if it was armed, trying to determine if it was going to go off. I accidentally armed it while doing this and frantically thought about evacuation, but managed to turn it off. I did that a few times. Then I thought about what to do with it. Some godlike entity told me i had to keep it. It would keep me safe but it was also my duty to protect it, make sure it didn't go off.
