When I was in college I had a psychology professor once say to us, "You know we're here asking questions about dreams. How about the next time you have a lucid dream try asking one of the characters about the waking world." I tried exactly that a few years back but I couldn't form any words and the character just looked at me with confusion. Last night was different. I could actually get my words out. I interviewed four or five characters. The first one simply didn't believe me that there was a "waking world." The others did. I can't write exact sentences; it was more of a transfer of knowledge rather than a spoken conversation although there was some talking. Their responses were basically that they were aware of the "other world" but they just didn't care. They explained that their existence was so short-lived that they only had time to care about their dream world since they would cease to exist once I woke up. They also explained that their characters exist specifically for that one dream and then never again, similar to how we only have our one life to live in the waking world. They said that their world was normal to them and, again, they just didn't care about the "other world" as they called it. It kind of makes sense if one thinks about it. If I only existed in different forms for only eight hours a day in a world where even the laws of physics can be ever-changing what would I care for another, more limited, existence when this one is more interesting?
