Trapped in a loop

Hiking up a hill, we find a castle ruin ahead of us, with the sun setting behind. I point out that we can see a tower on the horizon, behind the ruin. Turning 180deg, we look down the hill towards the water. There is an identical ruin, seen from the back, with an identical tower on the horizon. The sun is rising behind it. I realize that we are trapped in a geometry loop. No matter which way we go, forward or backwards, we’ll get closer to the ruin. We decide to turn right and walk 90deg away from both. We find the entry to a tunnel system and go through it. After many turns in the dark we emerge, looking out over a river. I realize that after traveling in the dark, we have know way of knowing which world we’ve entered into.
