Woke up in a dreamy state, thought about lucid dreaming, closed my eyes and found myself looking at something like a screen subdivided into rectilinear units, some large and some small. Each unit displayed a different color or full image. There were eyes, hair shades, flesh tones. I tried to exert my will to make them show me something different, and was able to get them to “shuffle” into new images and configurations. I was trying to get them to resolve into images of people, but the results were weird and misshapen, like those Google deep dream machine visualizations. I could feel that focusing hard, visualizing things like I do when I’m awake, was having imperfect results and pushing me to wakefulness. It felt like there was a knack to it, like thinking in a drifty, dreamy way could produce more coherent and interesting pictures.
