I was visiting the West Coast with my family on a road trip, starting with Northern California and traveling through Oregon. I remembered seeing the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean as we drove, and suddenly we were in Alaska. I don’t how how we got there so fast, but we did. We booked a lodge there somewhere in the central part of the state. It wasn’t a major city, and I do not recall the town. As we walked through the lobby to to find our room in the lodge, I saw a man made indoor river to my right with these long, narrow canoes floating on it. To my left, there was this other piece of equipment resembling a snowmobile hanging on the wall. It reminded me of Native American culture and what the students in my school were learning in their social studies class. When we finally got to our room, we had a wooden deck that was part of our room. We went outside on the deck and our neighbors were locals of Alaska. They were a couple, who were a middle aged man and woman. The woman I remembered had white hair with bangs, with her hair up in the bun. She had on an ivory turtleneck. She said to us, “Welcome to Alaska!” She also asked where we were from and explained that life over in Alaska is way different from New Jersey. When I observed the surroundings in Alaska, I saw snow everywhere and it was very cold. The buildings looked so different. There were more lodges and homes that could withstand the cold. The people dressed so plainly there, and it was nothing like it is here. I knew I could never see myself living here.
