mind games

Earth was taken over by two opposing AI. Each enslaved the minds of several million people, who were made to fight wars for the ”genetically superior” populations. I was one of only two soldiers who were still awake. The other soldier and I became close friends with our shared experience of being trapped in a world where nobody had independent thought–nobody except us. We promised to lay low in hopes of riding out the war and hopefully finding others who were awake, but it became too much for us to bear. Seeing people who were once our friends being turned into mindless zombies terrified us. One day I just grabbed my friend’s hand and ran. Our fear of being mind-controlled had outgrown our fear of being killed. We ran as far as we could until we reached an expansive resort, packed with thousands of free people. We received a few suspicious glances. But then their eyes would glaze over, and they would just go about their merriment, gambling and swimming and lounging and drinking. It made me wonder about the true extent of their freedom. We got some clothes from the gift shop and disguised ourselves, and together we hid amongst the free, seeking out others like ourselves.
