Abusive movie characters

I’m watching/experiencing a movie adaptation or at least a trailer, that was called Arsenic and Old Lace, but also Loves Labours Lost, by some characters (both plays we’ve recently done at work). I found the show to be rather repulsive, because it was like this romance thing where the guy was absurdly horrid to the girl—basically abusing her physically, and emotionally, and yet she always stayed with him and his violent acts were always played up as comedy. At one point, he’s put her in a barn stall that’s really more of a big muddy hole, and she’s trying to crawl out but he’s spraying more mud down on her. I couldn’t understand t because in a weird way she seemed to be totally okay with it.
