It was the rare time I was dreaming through my own eyes instead of someone else’s. Yet it was a younger version of me. Maybe 16 years of age. I was traveling with my family. We’d gone to visit one of the older styled downtown areas. I don’t know what state we were in. I just know that the place felt like old Charleston (South Carolina) but smaller. As we walked through the town we found our way to an interesting shop. It had knick-knacks and books and other random things all over the place. The shop had three floors. While everyone was going up the floors, I chose to stay on the ground floor and walk through the halls. I could sense a lot of these things actually had spirits tied to them the further back I went in the shop. I could hear the whispering of their voices. I tried pretending I couldn’t but they certainly could tell I heard them. As I reached the back wall I began to feel someone’s gaze. I sighed and calmed myself. I found a book that looked interesting but it had a spirit attached to it. I gave up on acting like I didn’t notice them. I looked at the book, a book on fae and dragons. It was such an odd combination in a book but that’s what drew me to it. “Do you mind if I read this?” I asked the spirit attached to it. I just heard a faint, “go ahead” and then the book opened before me. I gently lifted the book as I walked over to a chair that seemed to be one of few things without an attachment. I began to read over it. The pictures within were very detailed. Showing what they thought the anatomy of fae and dragons might be like. Even touching on different types of each. “Whoever gave this up lost quite the gem,” I whispered as I continued looking through the pages. “I agree.” came a voice that definitely wasn’t the spirit’s voice. I looked up to see a man who was at least five years older than me. He looked down at the book and I swore I heard the spirit attachment yelp. “Well that was rude,” I told him calmly, “If you didn’t want anyone to read it then put up a sign, don’t get mad at its companion.” I closed the book as gently as I could and placed it back on the shelf. The man followed me, seeming surprised by my words. “You can see them?” he asked me. “I can hear them, and feel their presence but my sight isn’t always active so currently I can’t,” I told him honestly. It was odd to be talking to someone so honestly about my gifts. Particularly someone I didn’t even know. “You’re the first to walk in here that could. Most come in, find something of interest without buying, put it back and then leave.” the man told me. I saw him wince. It was subtle but he was certainly in pain. I glanced over him and noticed his right hand seemed to be clenched in a fist. “If you’re hurting you should sit down. If it’s bad enough maybe see a doctor.” I told him and he did sit down. On the very chair I had sat on earlier. He chuckled as a woman walked in, almost gliding really, and brought a first aid kit to his side. She looked over at me, to which I saw deep amber orbs instead of her eyes, then back at him. “She can see me,” she stated and I blinked. “You… you’re not really…” I stammered. The man chuckled again, “She’s my guide. She’s not of this plane either. Normally people only see the human form but you seem to see beyond it.” “You’re fae,” I stated quietly, looking at the woman. I then noticed the amount of blood on his hand and arm, “That...what happened?” I normally would try not to ask such things when with strangers but my want to help was getting the better of me and these two were quite different than most I had met. “Ash?” I heard my mom calling from the upper floor. “Dammit…” I muttered before calling back, “I’m fine. I’m just looking through the books!” “We’ll be leaving here in a bit. We’ve found a couple things for the house.” She told me and I sighed, “Alright, alright. I’ll be down here.” The man chuckled at that, “You enjoying yourself here that much?” His voice had been quiet but I could also hear the pain he was fighting back as the fae woman helped clean up his wounds. “I don’t often get to talk to people who understand my gifts,” I told him honestly and watched as the fae woman finished bandaging him, “You made that book, didn’t you?” “What makes you think that?” He asked and actually held eye contact this time. I did my best not to look away. His eyes had an indigo color to them but with a silver spark around the pupil. He was tall. About a full foot taller than me and I stood about 5’7” normally. He was tanned, as well as built. Not quite football built. More like an MMA fighter. I could feel myself starting to really understand just how friendly I had been with someone who very likely could take me down in a matter of seconds if I said one thing wrong. The thing that really stood out though were the scales. If I hadn’t been looking so closely I wouldn’t have noticed but there were definitely scales. At the corners of his eyes and flecking his arm that had been injured. I allowed myself a steadying breath as I tried to think of how to explain, “Your guide is a fae. If not fully then at least in part. You have scales that are barely noticeable to someone who wouldn’t hold your gaze. So likely you are of dragon lineage, hiding in a human form.” “Evra…” the fae woman whispered as she saw him get to his feet. I gulped quietly but held my ground. He walked over to me and placed his left hand, his uninjured hand, on my shoulder. He paused before grinning, his eyes narrowing into slits as a faint silver glow emitted from them. My vision changed in that instant. We were no longer in the shop but in a forest. The fae woman was far less human now. Long vine-like hair and a deep forest green coloring for skin. Her deep amber eyes, bright orbs, sparkled with a glittery sheen. She had huge moth-like wings that she quickly folded behind her as my gaze left her and moved back to the man before me. Who was no longer a man at all. He was a towering beast covered in indigo, silver, and blue scales. Scales that shimmered and changed to look more green and copper in color as he blended into the forest setting. He lowered his head to my level and I could almost see a smirk cross his face. A toothy smirk. “Not dragon lineage. Very much a dragon. Got it.” I whispered in awe of the two. He nodded and my vision blurred. I felt dizzy and soon felt two hands hold me steady. I looked up as my eyes readjusted. There was that man again. He led me to the chair and sat me down. “Sorry about that. He forgets his magic is potent.” the fae woman said with a sweet smile, now looking more human again. I gave them both a weak smile. He handed me the book I had been reading before. A smile on his lips. I was still a bit dizzy but accepted the book. “May I see your hand?” I whispered. He held out his uninjured hand and I shook my head. He sighed and held out the injured one. I placed the book on my lap and took his hand in both of mine. He flinched from the pain. I gave a soft smile and felt for his energy, using my own to soothe the pain in his hand. “What are you--?” “Calm down. I’m not trying to hurt you. This will help you heal easier.” I whispered and connected my energy to his. Through this, I wove his energy throughout his hand and arm to weave a healing cast of energy. He seemed to relax as I worked and calmed completely when I let go of his hand. “What are you?” he asked as he eyed his hand. “Human. Just… a bit more gifted spiritually than some.” I answered, “Try not to move it around too much. That should help with the pain and the healing.” “Ash… are you sure you’re human?” he asked as he looked over his arm then back at me. “Last I checked.” I told him and shrugged, “But before today I wasn’t even sure dragons and fae were real. Just always kind of assumed they might be.” I looked up him and grinned, “May I know your name? Or is it the same as knowing the name of a fae?” The woman’s eyes widened for a moment and I just shrugged, “That rule always seemed oddly specific and was in a lot of fae books so I just assumed it was true.” “My name is Ahtevra, just call me Evra. You may call her Ilya.” He told me and she nodded. “Pleasure to meet you both, officially,” I told them. I spoke with them more as I waited for my family to come down. Ilya went with them to mark the furniture they wanted. She told them the furniture would be shipped to their addresses within the week. She came back down with them and Evra stayed by my side. “Keep that book. Don’t worry about cost. The spirit there seems to like you and my book belongs in the hands of someone who will actually treasure it.” He told me. I smiled and whispered to the spirit, “Guess you’ll have a new home soon.” I felt a warm energy wrap around me and knew the spirit was giving me a hug. Guess it was happy for the change of scenery. Evra glared at the book and the spirit let go. I laughed quietly. It was such an odd thing to see. “Be careful not to cause any problems.” He grumbled at the book. The spirit attached to it made a noise that sounded like a ‘harumph’ before going quiet. “I promise to take care of this book, and its attachment,” I told him with a smile. “Ash, time to go.” My mom called as I heard my younger brother coming my way. “I’m coming,” I told them and got to my feet. “We’ll meet again,” Evra whispered just before I left his side. “Preferably when I’m an adult,” I told him as I left the store, book in hand. My brother walked beside me and looked over the book. We looked at it together in the back of the car as we drove back to the hotel. (I awoke after that.)
