Anime boy

This one kind of reminded me of some anime I'm kinda watching. Some kid had magical weapons (a spear and a shield in this case) and was training to get better, as one does. There was a fight of some sort to move onto the next stage of training and the kid hadn't been able to activate the ability of his weapons yet so everyone was certain he was going to lose. He cheated in the first match and was set up for a retrial, where he was determined to prove himself again. He just barely managed to scrape a victory and the entire dream kinda derailed from there.
