I’m driving around the town I grew up in. Amy is siding shotgun and some other friends are in the back. I hear an odd tune on the radio and turn it up. “OH MY GOD THIS IS SHIRLEY GRAMMAR JINGLES” I say in disbelief. No one else gets it. I click some button and it starts playing the “music video” on the screen. Except it’s a video from when I was in elementary school. Me and my classmates are reciting the prepositions jingle “aboard, about, above, after, against, around, at! Beside, behind, below, between...” My classmates are all very enthusiastic. My friend Peter is named P. R. Yankovich. “Why is he Russian??” I wonder aloud as I sing along. The camera pans to 2nd grade me with messy hair and gapped teeth where I’d pulled all the loose ones. “But I don’t know how to math!” I shout dramatically. The class laughs. The video switches to an interview with Michael Phelps—before he was famous. He talks about the importance of math literacy in elementary schools. Present day me flips out and almost crashes the car because “I WAS IN A VIDEO WITH MICHAEL PHELPS???” Amy grips her seat for dear life as we careen through the intersection near super Wal-Mart.
