Pale skin & Thin hair

My brother had just come back from Australia and looked so different - in place of swarthy skin was melanin-less patchy skin - reminiscent of Vitiligo. His hair had thinned, losing it’s curls and colour. I was so confused and couldn’t understand what happened.
