This dream went all over the place, but it started with me and this other girl attending this small little ‘school’ for magically gifted kids. The school itself was a small, in-the-middle-of-nowhere building with like seven kids, all of whom lived in the small abandoned motel nearby. I was just average and she was awesome (when it came magic) however I happened to have a strange ability. My blood was so magical (as in my blood itself, not like my bloodline) that it could be used in spells and stuff. It didn’t really improve my skills at all, but it meant that the teachers were always cutting me open to take blood for this and that, it probably looked like I self harmed or something. Anyways me and this girl were in love, like deeply in love. And all of a sudden the teachers decide to come and experiment on me. They thought that, because of how readily my blood reacted to different magics, they could use my blood to transform me into another species entirely. They kidnap my girlfriend/lover and put her at the end of a series of obstacles, which will test my newfound abilities. I manage to escape them using rudimentary magic and break through the obstacle / maze things (which are held underground in what seems to be a maze of abandoned plumbing) without any new powers; I use my wits and the magic I already know to get through. It’s pretty impressive ngl. When I get to the end, though, they’re all waiting for me. My lover is tied up underwater and one teacher tells me she’s on a timer; when the timer ends, she will wake up, and the magic keeping her alive under the water will fade. I immediately jump in to save her but halfway down through the murky water I get blasted with something that feels like a bullet in my fucking skull. I go back to feel it and my hand passes over unmarked, unharmed skin, but the pain is still there, fading now. My head seems to be ringing, almost vibrating, like a bell someone just bonged, so I clutch my head and close my eyes trying to clear my vision. When I open them up again everything’s weird. Firstly, I can breathe. I know because my body instinctively takes a breath under the water, and it feels like... nothing. Like normal breathing. Also, I can’t see the water anymore. Everything around me is crystal clear. I see my lover ahead of me, it looks like she’s suspended in midair. My brain knows she’s underwater, and that I must be too, but I literally can’t see any water. Then I realize I’m floating. I can’t feel the water on my skin or around me anymore; my eyes feel fine open, even though I know that this water is disgusting and murky and should be terrible for my eyes I can see as if I were above it. Plus, it no longer feels cold or wet on my skin anymore, I don’t feel the currents pushing at me. It’s like I have complete and utter control. The only thing that feels underwatery is the fact that my hair (and my lover) is floating upwards. I move forward as if I were walking, and I get to her as easily as I would if we were above the water. It’s so weird that I don’t notice I’m still under at first. I figure the teachers must have magicked away the water, so I rush over and start trying to breathe life back into her. But then I feel that her mouth is dry and I see weird bluish-green stuff flow from my mouth to hers, and realize that I’m still underwater. And that, even worse, I just pushed water into her instead of air. I grab her and rush upwards, and I feel like I’m flying. Then I emerge above what must be the water, though its so clear I can’t tell where water begins and air ends. I grab the edge of the solid ground and pull myself up, feeling weirdly strong especially considering I’m carrying my lover too. I push her down and cough, hard, and something spews from my mouth. Water, I guess. I can still breathe above ground though, so I go to my lover and suck all the water from her lungs and into mine. She sputters to life and then looks at me and says, “what did they do to you?” I shrug, not feeling too different except for a slight difference in strength and awareness. I feel a little superhuman but not too much so. I say, “I’m still me,” and she nods and hugs me, but then she giggles and says “your eyes are whiteish blue, like snowflakes,” and then I laugh too and carry her back to the school. The teachers are nowhere to be seen, however I figure they must have told the other kids something about why I was missing, so me and my lover decide it’s for the best that I assume a false identity to see what we can find out. It’s not hard, since my eyes are already different, and my posture and movements are too from the super strength and whatnot. I change into clothes that aren’t really my style (aka something besides a T-shirt, jeans and a hoodie) and use a spell to make myself a redhead and add freckles. Then bam I’m a new me. I go into the school and that’s when I realize that whatever the teachers did to me also improved my magic skill. I get through class way easier than before, and one of the kids even asks if I’m kin of Merlin (Merlin, in this dream apparently, has a bunch of descendants who are the prodigies of the magical world. Nobody really knows who exactly they are since he had so many kids and grandkids and it all branched our so far nobody can tell for sure, but powerful kids with certain natural abilities are assumed to be his kin). I just laugh and say “no, but I’m a friend of [my real name], if you know her?” The kids eyes go wide and a white cloud spreads through their pupils. In unison they reply, “N-o.” Then go back to normal. I realize a spell has been used and after class I go and tell my lover that I need to go find the teachers. She agrees and says she has something else to find, but she won’t tell me what it is. I just tell her to stay safe, and give her a magical red mirror fragment (red from my blood) that she can use to teleport me to her if she’s in trouble. I kind of get this feeling from her that’s cold, which has never happened between us before in the dream. It’s like, I’m an entirely new person to her, and she’s trying to get the ‘old me’ back or something. She doesn’t say any of this but I know her well and get that vibe, and it makes me sad. I know I can’t change myself back, and if we grow apart I wouldn’t be able to change that either. I’d want to find the people responsible, though, so I’m filled with even more drive to find the teachers who changed me. Then I embark on this huge journey. Throughout the dream it switches between my perspective and my girlfriend’s perspective, almost like a movie. In my perspective, I manage to find a city right by the sea. I figure this might be where they could be hiding: it’s notorious for being full of witch’s bars and other magic buildings, so my teachers would probably go here, at least for a little. When I get there I meet three people, all in a group. They’re willing to help me if I help them, so I kind of become the fourth member of their team. The obvious leader of the group is a girl my age, with thick black hair down to just above her waist and the most beautiful olive skin I’ve ever seen. She has big almond eyes and a very serious face, and according to the rest of the group she’s the daughter of the chief of some tribe up in the mountains nearby. She ran away when she discovered she had magic, driven by a purpose which I don’t get to hear about yet but which is very intriguing. By the looks on their faces when they tell me, it’s something to do with revenge or maybe learning about her powers and using them for good. There’s also this boy in the group, he’s skinny with super dark skin, and he has the neatest hair you’ve ever seen. I don’t know how he keeps it that orderly and neat when he’s literally in a group that spends their time in the wild, camping out and basically hunting (or being hunted by) magical criminals, but it’s perfectly rounded, perfectly even, like impressively so. I have a hunch that he used magic for it but never really ask. Neat hair aside, this kid was kind of like the scout of the group. He was good with people and even better at lying and manipulating them, I mean he was a decent guy but I guess everyone has their talents and that was his. He said he used to be an actor so that factored into it a lot. He also had some pretty powerful magic weaponry and tools that he carried; magical crystals to teleport, to turn invisible, to summon storms or to call forth different members of our group; little magic marbles to stunt other people’s magic or to make it grow; small wands that break with one use but that make immensely powerful spells when activated; I mean this kid would open up his coat or hoodie to reveal rows of tools in secret pockets, like the magical equivalent of the joker with bombs lined inside of his coat. The third person is a friendlier girl who acts as the powerhouse of the group. She’s a kin of Merlin who can cast pretty powerful spells with just her hands, and she gives off an intimidating but helpfully small magic aura that helps when hunting down other magicians. She has a great memory and has the entire city memorized, even when it changes she knows it just as well, and acts almost like a mix of a guide and a soldier. She sometimes spies for the group if they need it but otherwise she is usually the first one to contact whoever the group is hunting down, and the one to fight them if necessary. She’s a pretty cool person though, nice when it all comes down to it, and she’s more fun than the other two, so she and I become fast friends when I join their team. Anyways, I tell them as little as possible to get them to help me; I basically say that, “I used to go to this school for magic, and the teachers there noticed I had magical properties in my blood, so they kidnapped my girlfriend and experimented on me before running away.” I don’t tell them about my new powers or abilities but the leader girl seems to check out my changed eyes a bit too much, and I think she’s probably suspicious about whether or not the experiments worked. She doesn’t ask though, instead she asks for a description of the teachers. I tell her they were adept at changing their appearance with magic, but I had recognized a few things from my years with them; one of the teachers can never seem to change her eyes, which are startlingly green with a single spot of brown in them; one teacher has annoyingly big ears which are always big no matter what form she takes; and another is always, always hunched over in her forms. I also tell the group that the teachers probably stuck together, so we should look for three people alongside each other with those descriptions. The leader girl tells me that it should be easy to find them, and starts off towards the city; the nicer girl tells me it might not be as easy as leader girl says. I follow them down this grass hill , which falls down onto a gravel path. I’m kind of uneasy about all of it, but excited. Some of the gravel turns into nerd candy when I step on it. Everyone looks at me like ‘wtf’ but I’m just like, who knows, who cares at this point, and I take a handful of the candy and pop it into my mouth. The leader rolls her eyes and tells me to change my appearance again so nobody recognizes me. I do so, and I find myself secretly relieved that I’m more powerful now, because it would’ve taken me a while to do this if I didn’t have my new powers. In fact I used to suck at physical magic; I was always better at mind magic, things you can’t see. That is, before I changed. Everyone else changes, though I can still tell them apart. The boy grows a beard and mustache, changes his skin to be lighter, gains freckles and slanted eyes, and a slightly cockier stride, but his hair is neat as ever. The nice girl turns her hair blonde and makes herself a little heavier, and changes her face to the point where only her smile is recognizable. And the leader girl makes her hair shorter and more brown, adds a birthmark over her cheek, and turns her eyes a lighter shade of hazel. I just change back to my old appearance, except I make my hair brown and my skin darker. We end up splitting into three groups. The boy goes and scouts through the city, asking around for people fitting the description and saying he’s ‘looking for a friend,’ while the nice girl goes to every magical bar, motel, back alley and/or business she knows to search for the teachers or anyone who might’ve sensed their auras. The leader and I scout around the edges of the city, making sure that the teachers don’t try and escape if they sense my aura, and also placing spells against them to keep them in the city. I remember being just a little bit attracted to this girl, even though I had a lover (if that’s what you could call her now, even though she seemed really cold and hadn’t even called me once) and so I was kind of flirting with her the entire time. She was so serious though, and either she wasn’t getting it or (more likely) she just didn’t care. We placed little hex bags on the corners of the pier that surrounded the city, burying them wherever we could and muttering spells under our breath. There was one point where we couldn’t find a place to bury one of the bags, and we needed to put it in the water to finish the spell, since that was the only other place it could be hidden. But the currents here were very fierce, literally just angry ocean style crashing. I couldn’t see it but I could hear it. I took the hex bag from leader girl and assured her that I could do it; then I jumped into the water (which was so clear I can barely see where it begins) and moved, easily, down to the bottom of the water, which was like over hundreds of feet down. I sink as if I’m falling- like I’m on an elevator, almost- but I land lightly. And I can see even though it should be dark and gloomy down here. Fish and even a few sharks and rays swim all around me but I don’t feel scared. It’s like when you see any other animal, it’s normal even though it shouldn’t be down here. And they leave me alone, except for this one eel that rubs against me like a cat wanting to be petted. It scratch just below its gills and it seems satisfied, so it leaves. Then I bury the hex bag under the sand (which feels dry and normal even though it’s literally the bottom of the sea) and cover it up, muttering spells under the water (which sounds like me muttering spells above the water. It’s so fucking weird man) and then I rise to the top with barely any effort, like flying instead of swimming. When I pull myself from the water, completely dry, not out of breath or anything, the leader girl looks at me really weird but thankfully she doesn’t ask any questions, so we move on. After searching and placing wards around the city all day, none of us have found the teachers yet, so we go back to our little camp outside of the city. When we go to leave through the pier that connects the land to the city, there’s a bunch of people at stalls giving us free samples and offering to sell us stuff. I end up taking a free paper plate which is claimed to be painted with ‘magic blue berry juice’ (it’s painted sparkly blue) and a bunch of free food which I eat immediately. The others tell me not to stand out but I can’t stop myself from taking free food. Like come on. On the way up to our camp I spot my nerd candy gravel and take another handful. The climb is steep and once again I find myself grateful for my new powers; without my super strength I’d never be able to keep up with this group. But with my powers I easily move ahead of them, without even getting out of breath. I know they must suspect something but they’re all kind enough not to ask. We go up more hills and once we reach the woods, we hike a little bit upwards until we reach a little divot in the mountain. It seems like a cave at first, but really it’s more just, a spot of flat land next to a small chip in the side of the mountain, which gives some shelter if we need it. I look out on the city from the camp and it’s stunning. There’s a giant hill leading down below us, rolling with a little bit of forest but mostly grass near the bottom. The gravel road seems tiny from here even though it’s wide enough to fit three cars side by side with plenty of side room. The path winds down to the pier, which extends out over a few miles of clear nothingness and out into the island which houses the city. The sun sets against the rising buildings and it seems like they’re on fire. I laugh, because it seems so ironic- in reality it’s surrounded by water, but I can’t see water anymore. It’s hard to explain but I couldn’t help laughing, and I guess it seemed funnier in the dream, where I had powers. The leader asks my what’s so funny and I just shake my head. Then the perspective shifts to my girlfriend. She’s alone, only employing help when she needs it and never letting anyone travel alongside her too long. For a bit she travels with a knight who gives her directions, but she leaves him while he sleeps as soon as she can. She also travels with a merchant who gives her coins, but does the same with him, only using him for his money. She seems changed from before. There’s mountains in the distance but she’s on the opposite side of them. She rides a donkey down a dirt road, surrounded by bushes that form a maze from a fairytale. Red roses grow from every bush, perfect and vibrantly sweet. The air smells like cinnamon apples. My lover/girlfriend even looks like she’s from a fairytale- she wears a red, hooded cloak to hide her face, and her strawberry blonde hair tumbles out from the cloak like a princesses hair. Her rosy cheeks and pretty green eyes are hidden but I can tell she’d fit right into this place. With her she carries a basket, filled with only five things; a magic water bottle that refills itself with clean, fresh water as long as it’s within twenty miles of any water source; the magic mirror fragment I gave her; an old, battered book full of dark and mysterious spells; her wand; and a strange green crystal piece that matches her eyes. She seems determined to get to wherever she’s headed, though I don’t know where that is. As she’s traveling on the road she gets joined by a few men on horses, who have the look of knights who are off duty. They tease her and catcall her a little bit but she ignores them. Then they start harassing her more and eventually one brings his horse in front of her, blocking her path. She tells him to move and he says, “or what?” and without warning she puts a hand in her basket, grasps her wand, and starts whispering a spell. The man slides from his horse without another word, haughty smile still on his face, cheeks still flushed with anger. He’s dead. She turns to look at the other men behind her and her hood falls back, revealing her pretty face. Her eyes are dangerously bright and her red lips are drawn into the most serious, most neutral expression ever. It’s scary. She looks at them without even raising an eyebrow, and the look asks, “anyone else?” The men start to protest and one even starts to ride away on his horse, so she whispers a few more words and they all slide from their mounts, dead as the first man. She takes her hand from the basket, pulls her hood back over her head, and moves on, guiding her donkey over the corpses of the fallen men. The fairytale world seems to shimmer around her, trees that are too green waving in perfect breezes, soft grass rippling, perfect red roses turning their smooth, bloody faces to watch my lover as she goes, their heads left staring after her almost hungrily, and suddenly the apple-cinnamon air reminds me too much of the smell of the witch from Hansel and Gretel. After that, the perspective comes back to me, where I’ve started to actually crush on this leader girl. Like kind of hard. She’s fierce and strong, and so far hasn’t shown any signs of being straight, which means I have a chance. I’d tried to call my girlfriend/lover pretty much every night, with no success. I even tried to scry on her using magic, but she had either blocked me specifically or she just had protective spells around her for wherever she was going. I think it’s important to note that I didn’t know anything about what she was doing? It was like, I was watching a movie that I was also in. I saw my girlfriends perspective and my own, but neither of the two came together or knew of each other’s perspective in any way. Anyways, the group seemed to notice and the nice Merlin-kin girl told me that she’s “sure my lover was just being careful against everyone magical,” but I wasn’t convinced. The leader even found me one night, when I was out on the edge of where we camped out, phone in hand, and told me she was sorry. I said she had nothing to be sorry for, and that this wasn’t the worst thing the teachers had done anyways. She didn’t have anything to say to that. In fact, I felt kind of glad that it had all gone this way; I liked this new group I was in, and although I missed my lover, and worried for her all the time, it was better for her to be left out of all of this. To be away from me, because I was different now and the only thing my changing had gotten her was a near-death experience. I eventually stopped calling, (although it hurt to do so) and it felt better after a while, like I was free. She didn’t like me, not anymore, not how I was now; but this WAS me now, the changed me, like it or not. Or not for her I guess. Our group had sensed the teacher’s auras in the city, but it was so big it would take a few days to find them, even with the wards keeping them inside. Not to mention they had probably expected me to come looking for them, and with my new powers they had to be extra prepared. We went for another trip into the city with a new plan; we would use a powerful spell to teleport one of us to the teachers, with the hope that they didn’t have any traps set for that sort of thing. I immediately offered to go. The leader protested, saying I was the newest and that I needed to keep myself away from them considering what they did to me last time- the boy pointed out that they might WANT me to come to them, even. The nice girl said that it would be dangerous, but it was my decision. I told the rest of them that I had the best chance. The teachers knew me, at least well enough to not kill me on sight. Plus, they never got to see what happened when they changed me, because as soon as I got hit with that spell I released a blast of magic that sent them away. So they were probably curious as to what I could do, or if I could do anything at all. Even if they did want me, I was the only one that they were pretty much guaranteed NOT to kill. At least not right away. This was the first time I even came close to discussing the experiment to these people- to discussing my powers- but again, they were kind enough not to question it. The group saw that I had a point and agreed- but the leader made sure I had a bunch of protective spells and stuff before they sent me. I ate a magic protection plant from the boy that warded me against poisons, the nice girl used her magic to place powerful bubbles around me that defended against different spells, and the leader girl gave me a kiss on the cheek which she swore was just her transferring magical energy into my mind to ward against mind attacks. I told her that she could give me another kiss on the lips for protection over my heart and she slapped me, but not too hard. And my powers meant that I barely felt the slap so I laughed, which made her even more angry, though we were both just messing around really. Then all three of them started the teleportation spell. It was super advanced with all these different chants and different herbs, crystals and symbols drawn around me, and even with their powers combined, it was really hard to find the location of someone you don’t know, don’t have anything from (like clothing or hair, which is usually used in spells) and don’t even know what they look like to picture them in your head. Even so I felt it working. My vision started to do this thing that was almost like everything going double- except instead of me seeing everything twice, I was seeing two different things at once. One was my friends working the spell around me, and the other was a dimly lit motel room and the backs of three strangely familiar women. Eventually the image of my friends faded and then I heard a loud pop! that sounded like your ears popping but louder. I stumbled into the room, and the sounds and smells changed all of a sudden. Now I heard traffic and the sounds of the city all around me, and the murmuring of three women. I smelled something weird, something I recognized as a potion though I couldn’t quite name it. Then one of the women turned around and I saw her familiar eyes. “Oh, we’ve been expecting you,” she said. “I know,” I replied. The perspective changed to my girlfriend’s story once again and this time, she was riding up to the mountain. The road around her was the same road, the same dirt path surrounded by trimmed bushes that sprouted blood red roses. Only this time the air had a sense of foreboding around it. The roses were bigger on the bushes, slightly darker, like fresher blood, and occasionally you could see some leaves out of place on the otherwise perfectly neat hedge. The dirt road faded into the mouth of a massive cave, a cave which lead directly into the center of the mountain. My girlfriend had the same red hooded cloak on, and she wore the same adventurer’s clothes as before; brown leather boots with dark trim, beige pants held up with a silver-lined buckle, and a tan and brown shirt stitched with intricate silver patterns, cut neatly on the arms and legs like something from Zelda. In her basket she had a few new items. She had a compass which was pointing towards the mountain, and a map with strange writing on it. The writing seemed to be always moving, always changing, like the script itself couldn’t decide what to say or what language to be in. On the map there was a path leading into a mountain, and inside of the mountain there were several tunnels leading to different places. In the heart of the mountain there was a big red X. She also had a strangely colored apple in the basket. It was red at first, but faded up to a shimmery pink, then to a sky blue and a light green at the top, with some orange thrown in between. It shone so bright you could see it’s light from outside of the basket. My girlfriend looked weirdly unchanged even though it was obvious she had travelled a long way. Her hair was the same length, still perfect and strawberry golden, with little curls and twists at the ends. Her rosy-cheeked face showed no signs of tiredness, and there wasn’t a speck of dirt on her, although when she reached up to push back her hood, the very tips of her fingers were stained a bright red, like she’d just barely dipped them into a bucket of red paint. She looked up at the cave with that same neutral, almost bored expression on her face. It was dark and wide, and you couldn’t see a thing inside of it. She slid off of her donkey, grabbed her basket, and turned around to face the road behind her. The donkey looked at her tiredly, but sweetly. It nickered and pushed its nose into her hand, and she petted it. The donkey seemed happy, but extremely tired, as though she had made it ride for days on end without sleep. It also seemed hungry and thirsty, but it didn’t complain once. It just enjoyed her petting. Then, still petting the donkey, she held her other hand in this weird position- it was like she was cupping something invisible in her palm, almost- and then turned it sideways. She made a pulling motion, like she was trying to pull something out of midair away from the donkey. The donkey dropped dead in an instant, and the red on the fingers of her hand grew just a shade darker, and the color crept up her fingers to just past her nails. Without saying a word she turned around and went into the mouth of the cave, and she looked very small and innocent in comparison to the gaping mouth of the mountain. With a basket in hand, she reminded me of red riding hood, making her way down the path to meet the end of her story, and all the horrors within. Except the glint in her green eyes said otherwise. It said she knew where she was going, and she planned to kill the wolf first. The dream ended there and honestly I’m very confused. Number one, I don’t know how I could remember all of this because usually I can’t remember my dreams at all. Number two, it seems like this is some sort of story from a book or movie, which makes me think maybe I read something like this before? Except I can’t remember reading anything like this so I have no idea where it came from.
