the president wanted to try a new system of government where children and teens lived separately from adults. the kids lived in a little community including a run-down bus, a store, and an auditorium in which school was held. the adults lived in a neighboring community, but none of the kids knew what it was like because we couldn’t go inside. when you turned 18, you could choose to either die or move on to the adult community. once a week, the kids had to gather onto the bus and the adults were allowed to steal anything they wanted from us. other than that, life in an all kids community was not so bad. we were fed for free since we couldn’t work, there was no curfew, and we could do whatever we wanted. sometimes my friend shep and i would go to the beach, but i spent most of my time with ben, gill, and faith. ben, gill, and i decided to go shopping one day for some sunglasses when we struck up a conversation with the store clerk, who was an adult. he told us the adult community was not as nice as ours. food and housing were difficult to come by, and as a result they had a huge gang problem. violence was rampant; whenever the adults came to steal our stuff they were all spattered in blood. obviously this frightened us. we were only a few years away from this fate, and therefore only a few years away from either government-assisted suicide or going on to live in a dystopia. i was torn. ben decided he was going to choose death but gillian wanted to live. i wasn’t ready to die, but i sure as hell wasn’t about to go live in the adult community. after careful contemplation, i decided not to die. one night, gill and i decided to sneak out of our community. when we got out, we saw nothing for miles, but then a group of titan-like giants came. gill and i ran back to our safe little community and immediately went to talk to the president. he didn’t seem to care that we had escaped. he told us that some adults, those who were “worthy” could choose to live on the outside as giants. we never asked how one may become “worthy” and we didn’t want to know.
