The old file

Nicolas Cage was part of a police assault on a building. I think this was for some show. He had a shotgun and shot out the lock then he entered the building. I was standing outside with other police officers. We heard gunfire inside. Machine gun fire answered with fast shotgun blasts back and forth. I wondered why the other officers weren’t helping as we stood outside and listened. Eventually the machine gun fire lessened, then ceased, and we entered the building. I was looking through a pile of old case files. I found a really old one for some guy I prosecuted a long time ago. I recognized the name in the dream, but I can’t remember it now. Anyways, the case had never been resolved and it looked like it was in a pile of cases with warrants outstanding that the police were trying to resolve. The defendant had failed to appear for some hearing and the case had been pending since then. I thought it was odd that the police were wasting time on such an old low-level case. I think it was for a DUI or simple theft, or something along those lines. I remember thinking, “how are they going to find this guy now?” I was standing with some cops and I said something like “this case must be from like 2011,” but then I looked at the date on the file I saw it was a 2009 case. I realized it must be one of the first cases assigned to me since I had started at the DA’s office that year. I saw some small handwriting in blue pen across the top of the front of the file that was difficult to read because it overlaid some other writing on the file. I looked closer and I thought it looked like the chicken scrawl of my old colleague Shawn B. It said “peepee ding dong.” I started laughing with the cops I was with.
