Found Family in the Mutant Apocalypse

A show where a big diverse group of people are amassing in this found family house type deal. There were several elders that were taking in and providing for a bunch of younger folks, materially and emotionally, building trust. The world was also kinda ending cuz some people were turning into these huge crazy mutant monsters. It seemed to go on for a long time and be really elaborate with a huge cast of characters. The main thing I remember tho is right before I woke up, these two kids who liked to practice that stick/staff fighting sport, were in an intense sparring sesh, and then they stopped to talk. The white kid, who was more rebellious/mischievous, said something like that they should put on a show for everyone, and that it wouldn't even be a contest, it showed a little cartoon of what might happen, the poc kid was unleashing a flurry of jabs and sweeps or whatever, the white kid didn't even have a stick and was just dodging every strike effortlessly. The poc kid was like how would that happen? And the white kid started transforming into a mutant, he ended up unrolling into this wide flat thing like an air mattress. The house mom (who was also me, I think? I was seeing from her perspective anyway) showed up and was disappointed, I think she was trying to figure out if she should kick him out of the house. The cat was walking on the monster's exposed underbelly. The monster's body kind of folded over to enclose the cat, and the cat crawled deeper into the crevice. I was like should I be saving this cat right now? A distorted version of the kids voice said, indignantly, "the cat is fine!" Through a tunnel in the monster's flesh, I could see the cat curled up, napping.
