Leaving messages for future self

I am looking for a device, a machine that I need in order to finish what I started, but I’m stuck. I think it has something to do with time travel. I am in a field behind a house, and I think that I am giving up until I start receiving messages from my past self, the self that last had the machine. These messages are like video clips in my head, like a dream or a memory. In these clips I am able to see the path that my past self took and created in the same field so I follow it, like a live action video. I follow this vision through the field until I find a building that seems innocuous. It is a small building, not one that should hold my machine but when I open the door there it is.
